APRIL 2000 [summarised in Newsletter 1st May]
28th April: Millennium Balloon launch scheduled for 29th April has been deferred due to "jetstream and ground winds" - to Saturday 6th May 2000 - see FOCUS.

28th April: Mercy-USA for Aid and Development, a nonprofit international relief and development organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering and supporting individuals and their communities in their efforts to become more self-sufficient, has been added to our Worldwide Appeals & Projects pages for Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, Turkey, and Somalia (Africa).

27th April: Solo Skipper Vinny Lauwers' latest update - "Dolphin Watching" - Vinny is now 1400 miles past the half-way point ..... you'll find the link to this update in FOCUS.

26th April: We've added to the Guestbook a letter received from Kristine Pawloski, a 27 year -old certified American Deaf Education teacher in Chicago, searching for a Deaf Education teaching position in England. She'd welcome any help anyone can offer, including information on obtaining a working visa etc.

25th April: We're delighted to say that Michael Tipper's May articles on Accelerated Learning are now on line. The Book Review is of "The Learner's Pocketbook", the Amazing Brain fact is about Cab Drivers' Brains, this month's Great Mind is Chris Moon, the Memory Training article is all about The 6 Step Master Plan for Accelerated Learning, and the Mnemonic is about remembering the elements up to Argon in the Periodic Table.

May is Michael's last set of articles before his annual two month break to focus on organising the World Memory Championships in August 2000 (see next para).

25th April: A Press Release has now been added in the Accelerated Learning area of the site for the World Memory Championships 2000, with comprehensive details of the events being held.

21st April: Signing up for the *free* Hunger Site newsletter donates an extra FIVE cups of food [click on "triple your donation" at their site]. Giving food each day is FREE, all you have to do is remember to visit and click the "donate free food" button each day.

Click here to reach the Hunger Site - your visit each day can make a real difference to whether a child somewhere lives to see tomorrow.

Wishing everyone a happy Easter .....

20th April: Solo Skipper Vinny Lauwers' latest update - "Turning point. St Pedro & St Paolo Rocks" - any time now, Vinny will be rounding the rocks to start his journey home ..... you'll find the link to this update in FOCUS.

20th April: In response to regular requests for info about "the people behind the website" we recently added a bio for Michael Tipper, who writes the Accelerated Learning area. There's now also one on line for Penny, who builds the pages for the rest of the site - and that page should serve as an easy reference point to which to re-direct the many enquiries as to how and why Project HappyChild was set up in the first place.

20th April: Nearly 8 million people are on the brink of a humanitarian and ecological disaster in drought-stricken Ethiopia. Three years without rain have caused crops to fail and cattle to die, leaving farmers and their families with little left to eat. The Hunger Site [where you can donate food *free* on line each day] is working with the World Food Programme to provide food each day for up to 45,000 desperately hungry Ethiopian school children to concentrate on their lessons and stay in school - see Appeals & Projects Ethiopia.

In the aftermath of severe floods in Venezuela and Mozambique school feeding projects are also helping many children continue their studies, so they don't lose a whole year of school as well as their homes and stability - see Appeals Venezuela and Appeals Mozambique for more details. You can help actively simply by visiting the Hunger Site website [as do several hundred thousand people across the world each day] - one "click" on the "Donate Food" button can donate anywhere between one and four cups of food, depending on the number of commercial sponsors for that day.

19th April: If you missed this year's Trek Nepal, there's another chance to put your name down for this popular event - "Trek Nepal 2001 takes place from 20-29 April 2001 and is an opportunity to see some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. You will have the chance to visit the bustling markets of Kathmandu, the shores of the beautiful Phewa lake and the magnificent temples of Patan." For more details see the Sponsored Events page - this Trek is offered by Children in Crisis.

18th April: Solo Skipper Vinny Lauwers' latest update - "No wind in the doldrums!" - 17th April 2000 - see FOCUS.

18th April: The link to the Makaton Signing Vocabulary database has had to be removed from the Syndromes Links Index - we're informed the site was discontinued due to an objection to this resource being made available free on line.

18th April: We've had confirmation from F9 that there is indeed a problem with their webstats generation programme for which the software is now being extensively re-written [see our webstats page]. They hope to have full webstats reinstated within a couple of weeks.

18th April: Our "re-direction" page [in place of the usual "404" error page when visitors go off track] has been re-designed to incorporate links to more areas of the site, to enable new visitors accessing via expired pagelinks on search engines, to more easily find what they were looking for.

17th April: The National Association for Toy & Leisure Libraries' range of publications has been added to the Charity Booklists page in the Project HappyChild Shop - including a directory of companies producing or selling toys and play equipment suitable for children or adults with special needs, specific toys for new toy libraries to consider in their purchasing decisions, and an insight into how switches can give adults and children control over their play and learning - also the Good Toy Guide & Awards [toys tested in NATLL Toy Libraries]. Details added also to the Syndromes Links index page.

16th April: For general ease of access by all visitors, pages in the UK area of Schools Interchange have been streamlined (particularly England A-M, England N-Z, Scotland and Wales) to allow easier loading of the longer pages; background information about the UK's complicated structure has been moved to a linked explanatory page.

Similarly, details about the unique construction of Schools Interchange [and information about adding links to local school nets in visitors' own areas] have been moved from individual country pages throughout Africa, the Americas, Australasia and Eurasia [Europe/Asia] to a separate linked page, allowing all individual country pages to be downloaded more swiftly.

15th April: Just a reminder that the London Marathon is tomorrow - see our Sponsored Events page.

14th April: Millennium Balloon launch deferred to 29th April - due to "snow and wind", and prior commitments next two weeks - see FOCUS.

13th April: Solo Skipper Vinny Lauwers' latest update - "Living with my disability" - 13th April 2000 - see FOCUS.

13th April: Our Sponsors page has been updated to include the translation facilities made available to us by FreeTranslation.com, which have enabled us to make the recent translations of very long webpages.

12th April: Web-based random maths problems have been added to index pages for Maths Key Stages One, Two, Three and GCSE. Our thanks to Randall Rose of Fairbanks Country Day Preschool through High School, San Diego, California, who sent in details of this resource.

11th April: Further to yesterday's notes on translating lengthy webpages, the other "very long page" on this website is our UFO Story, "Glaxibel The Avenger" - to make this page available to overseas visitors it, too, has been auto-translated into another six languages. However we're aware that the story loses something in the machine translation and would welcome help from any visitors fluent in French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese or Spanish, to find appropriate wording for parts of the story where the meaning is less apparent.

10th April: The Index to Free Educational Resources on the Internet worldwide has now been auto-translated into French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and also Norwegian, for the benefit of overseas visitors who were unable to translate the entire page (very long!) with the auto-translate facilities linked directly from Project HappyChild. Whilst the translation is "approximate" in places, the new pages make the Index accessible to a great many more visitors worldwide.

7th April: Millennium Balloon launch deferred to 15th April - see FOCUS.

7th April: Ockenden International are asking UK schools to organise handprint collections for their "Million Hands of Hope" appeal raising funds for schooling for refugee children in Pakistan and several other projects worldwide; schools, companies and individuals can also help by collecting foreign coins left over from holidays abroad - please see Resources Required.

7th April: Vinny Lauwers' latest update - "Sailing fast towards Martin Vaz" - 7th April 2000 - see FOCUS.

7th April: The "Hand of Hope" Appeal from The Children's Trust has now raised an incredible £4 million. They have £2 million more to raise, to fund a new state of the art Therapy and Rehabilitation Centre - more details on their Appeal page. Incidentally The Children's Trust website is being re-designed at present (so the site address is unavailable), but e-mail and telephone access are detailed on their Directory entry. Their Events Calendar (see 6th April, below) shows some of their many fundraising events for the year 2000.

7th April: Webstats have been temporarily suspended as the stats page provided by F9 is not recording all visits. Most visitors will be aware that there have been intermittent problems with site access since F9 was "packet bombed" - we're hoping that everything will return to normal shortly.

6th April: A wealth of Events including a Celebrity Pigeon Shoot, a London Hat Show, a Dracula Spectacular and an Easter Egg Hunt appear in the Events Calendar 2000 now on line for The Children's Trust - the relevant events are now also linked from the General Events and Sponsored Events pages.

4th April: Vinny Lauwers' latest update - "Hardship and Joy" - 4th April 2000 - see FOCUS.

4th April: The first vocabulary section in our free-to-print French resources for practice and revision has now been completed (index plus 7 worksheets). This new area of the website (likely to span several hundred additional pages) is scheduled for completion by Summer 2000.

3rd April: Michael Tipper's April pages on Accelerated Learning are now on line. The Review is of "Your Mind at Work", the Mnemonic is about spelling, the Amazing Brain Fact is about the effects of jet lag; this month's Great Mind is Winston Churchill, and the memory article is about "The Mega Mind Map".

2nd April: We're sorry to report that BushNet (an on-line school net for schools in the Australian outback) has now ceased operation - our thanks to Mark Ivory at Malanda Primary School for advising us of this. The Australia page in Schools Interchange has been amended to include a forwarding address for e-mails to schools previously on BushNet - we've also amended the page for Japan as it was Mark Ivory's links from a previous page at Mt. St. Bernard College on BushNet which led us initially to the huge resource for schools and universities on line across the whole of Japan.

1st April: Millennium Balloon launch deferred to 8th April - see FOCUS.

1st April: Project HappyChild News April 2000 now on line.
