Welcome to the pages for our Roving Reporter, Kathryn Watts |
During the period when Kathryn wrote these pages, she was a student studying for an MA at Newcastle University, further to studying Psychology at Manchester University in England. In the year following 'A' levels Kathryn worked for a few months to generate some funds and then spent six months travelling around Australia. After flying to Sydney (stopping en route for a week in Singapore) she worked her way up the East Coast to Cairns, where she dived at the Great Barrier Reef, then to Darwin and the outback, visiting Alice Springs, Urulu and Kings Canyon. From there she travelled to Adelaide and Melbourne and across to Tasmania (encountering some Tasmanian Devils in the process!). On her return journey she visited Bali, and stayed in Java for a few days. In her first summer holiday from Manchester UV (1997) she went to Vietnam for six weeks with a friend - hiring a motorbike and travelling from Saigon down the Mekong Delta, then through to Sapa with its hill tribes, and up to Hanoi. From there they took a train to Beijing, visiting Tiananmen Square and (of course!) climbed the Great Wall of China. In summer 1998 Kathryn travelled around Zimbabwe, canoeing down the Zambezi river into Zambia, and white-water-rafted at the Victoria Falls. Jeep safaris brought her face-to-face with wildlife including lions .... and she travelled through many of the National Parks, also spending four days camping out in the mountains, even sleeping in a cave. Afterwards she crossed over into Mozambique, which turned out to be a whole new experience. At Christmas 1998 she travelled to Morocco / Marrakesh. |
Kathryn offered to be a "Roving Reporter" for Project HappyChild, when this website first went on line, back in 1998. She had masses of photos from her travels and has written articles about different aspects of lifestyles and cultures in the various countries she has travelled through and worked in (fruit picking, waitressing, barwork, even as a cook on a trawler boat!). We'd like to thank Kathryn for all the work she put in (free!) to create these articles. which have touched chords with visitors, particularly the Vietnam veteran who wrote to her after reading Article 8. Such letters make a world of difference, and we'd like to thank all the people have been in touch after reading her writings. Nine articles by Kathryn are on line [click to access] Article 1 ..... the lifestyle of children in other cultures, from the Far East, Africa, Vietnam ..... Article 2 ..... the development of children in these cultures, as related to lifestyle and education. Article 3 ..... Morocco / Marrakesh ..... Xmas 1998. Article 4 ..... A short history of Morocco and the Berbers. Article 5 ..... The architecture and souqs of Morocco. Article 6 ..... Art, music and social etiquette of the Moroccan people. Article 7 ..... Experiences of Australia. Article 8 ..... Vietnam - a country of contrasts. Article 9 ..... Minority villages in Vietnam |
