Peristalsis is the rhythmic contraction of muscles in a tubular structure, such as tubular parts of the digestive system, which results in regular waves of muscle movement.


These waves of movement can cause either the propulsion of something down the tube - such as swallowed food, for example - or provide a means of locomotion in tubular animals, like earthworms.
