A black hole is a region of space which has such an intense gravitational field that nothing, not even light, can escape from it and in which all matter is destroyed.

Black holes cannot, therefore, be "seen", but their existence can be inferred by the behaviour of matter and light around them which is observable.

It is believed that some, at least, of the black holes in space have been formed by the collapse of massive stars, many times bigger than our sun, after they have "burnt out" and are no longer able to maintain their cores' huge masses against their own gravitational fields.
