Natural selection is the mechanism by which evolution is believed to occur in species over time.


Organisms reproduce and produce offspring with different genotypes because of mutation (asexual and sexual reproduction) and / or genetic recombination (sexual reproduction only).


Those individuals whose genotype makes them the most "fitted" to their environment will be the most likely to survive and breed, passing on the useful characteristics.


The next generation will contain proportionately more of such individuals, and the species can, therefore, evolve.
