AREA 4:

FREE WORKSHEETS &
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

Index to free educational resources on the Internet worldwide

Freeway - free worksheets for English, poetry writing, lateral thinking, mc lyrics, spellings, sounds and meanings, word search puzzles, making crosswords, dictionary usage, translation, French verbs, French vocabulary, Maths, addition, times tables multiplication, division and fractions

There are - as you'll know - many educational resources on the web. Locating the specific area you require isn't always easy. The search engines are very helpful but you can spend a lot of time trawling round looking for what you need.

When we originally created this page, we made a start on Educational Resources with targeted links to the WWW Virtual Library (because that was about the best source worldwide for grouped blocks of educational resources available). The WWWVL theme headings were in capitals, - each of those led to specific pages detailing many different resources linked to the subject chosen.

Since then the WWWVL has changed quite a lot :/ and many of the original resources are no longer available. We have just (5th December 2010) completed the very long process of updating this page, and many more non-WWWVL links have been included, like those to a wide range of free maths resources (all key stages) provided by Cambridge University, and comprehensive Maths resources from primary right through A Level, thanks to a collaboration between the Peto Institute in Budapest, Hungary, and the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching at Exeter University, England (see Maths Key Stages, further down the table, for both of these), as well as links to a substantial range of free worksheets on the site here ( *all* our worksheets are free to print - see the Freeway page).

Free and *original* resources on the site here include a complete system for teaching children to read, and writing practice worksheets (letters and numbers), as well as 2000 simple addition worksheets, 2000 subtraction worksheets and a complete system for learning and practising times tables multiplication with matching worksheets for times tables division.

We've also designed a simple way for kids to learn about fractions - two "Bart and Miss Walker" stories - An Introduction to Fractions and "Addition of Fractions. Latest on fractions: The third "Bart and Miss Walker" story, "Fractions and Percentages", explaining step by step how to convert percentages to fractions; also free worksheets on percentages.

LEARNING ENGLISH (as a second language) : 800 free worksheets are now on line in "Any Language to English". Also, 800 free verbs-and-vocabulary worksheets have been completed (per language) for French-English, Russian-English, German-English, Dutch-English, Polish-English, Romanian-English, Urdu-English and Arabic-English, and around 400 each so far, for Italian-English (verbs), and Spanish-English (verbs).

Most recent additions: the first 250+ Spanish-English vocabulary worksheets (more in progress), 400+ Turkish-English vocabulary worksheets, 400+ Bulgarian-English vocabulary worksheets and 390+ Russian-English verbs worksheets.

Latest sets on line (20th February 2013) are Chinese-English vocabulary (2400+ worksheets) - there are six sets - English to Simplified Characters, English to Pinyin SC, Pinyin SC to Simplified Characters, and English to Traditional Characters, English to Pinyin TC, Pinyin TC to Traditional Characters.

Free dual-language worksheet sets are also in preparation for several other languages ..... see the Translators' page. All dual-language sets are designed to "match" so that children of different nationalities can learn English side by side in classrooms.

NEW AREA: 3D Gridbuilding - Science ~ this new area (3600+ pages) now has all the basic content in place. Aimed at GCSE-level understanding, it's a series of many interlinked definitions of "what things are" - from atoms to cells, from hydrocarbons to electro-magnetic radiation. Pages like "waves" or "respiration" show the sort of lateral linking that is now in place (automatically, by means of the programming behind the scenes) - check out the "BACK LINKS" on those pages, underneath the definition. Further content for the "elements" pages is due on line later, whenever received here.

Nearing completion: Keywords for Learning - as many of you will know, we have been working in conjunction with Mario Becroft in New Zealand (see our Sponsors page) over an extended period, to prepare the basics for this resource. We have now finally been able to put together all the "keyword lists" for the new wordsearch puzzles.

To integrate the 1400 new puzzles (the final total will be over 1600) with the learning resources elsewhere on the site here, we've used the vocabulary content from the dual-language worksheets area, the basic themes of the science area - biology, chemistry and physics - and the extraordinary range of USA state counties. New content also includes lists sent in by visitors across a wide range of sports, leisure and general knowledge themes, as well as Pokémon and Harry Potter.

Our thanks to everyone who has sent in content for the wordsearch puzzles :) the puzzles themselves are currently under construction and will go up on line once they have all arrived here. Meanwhile the actual "word content" of all the puzzles is now visible on the index pages within the Keywords for Learning area, and in the case of the science, each word links directly to the page where it is defined.

Now completed - Spellings, Sounds and Meanings - templates are on line for writing poems, mc lyrics, lateral thinking and making crossword puzzles, and we have now finally completed the SOUNDS DATABASE together with a fully-structured index to word sounds throughout the English language. Sample words for each sub-group have been provided, along with nearly 500 sound files to illustrate "standard English" pronunciation (all linked from the relevant sound sub-group index pages).

Our thanks to Mario, whose programming skills have enabled us to do the set-ups for worksheets for writing, spelling, dictionary use, making crossword clues and simple wordsearches for each block of 10 words in the individual sound sub-groups; all the new worksheets are now on line, linked from the SOUNDS DATABASE. Also available are "blank templates" to allow for selection of specific words from sound sub-groups, to provide further worksheets for class use or different ability levels.

Further resources now completed: a colour-coded global index to COUNTRIES across the world (with masses of info including languages spoken, country codes, dialling codes, banknotes, education, maps, capitals, and much more), and also USA STATE COUNTIES which includes an alphabetical index - and links - to every state county right across America.

The Potted Learning Pages - a single-page collection of the **best** FREE classroom resources on the Internet

See also The Potted Learning Pages - a collection of some of the best *free* resources on the Internet worldwide, for learning school subjects - physics, chemistry, Latin, geography, biology, maths, history ... and much more.

As well as strictly "academic" subjects in the massive index below to free educational resources worldwide, we've also included items of general interest to kids like "Andy's Guide to Pokémon", for children using versions of the game from red, blue, yellow right up to diamond, pearl and platinum - hundreds of pages built up over the last ten years or so, and phenomenally popular! - and "Sol's Guide to Harry Potter" - a huge resource designed to link together thousands of different factors from all seven books. Fully designed and partly-constructed - see the special note of 1st July 2008 - and providing a unique insight into "how to write like J K Rowling".

You'll also find, below, details of where to find the websites of teams like Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal - all the premiership clubs as well as many other football links - and a wide variety of other links ranging from Project Gutenberg (huge numbers of e-books available for free) to the Large Hadron Collider, and from Bletchley Park Computer Museum to the Whale Watching Web.

At the foot of this Index you'll find some more links to items of general interest - like the Vatican website, RSPCA, RSPB, No. 10 Downing Street (England), The White House (USA), EDNA in Australia ... and the Royal Wedding.   There are also some free classroom resources in the FOCUS area of this site, along with a special tribute to Princess Diana and her work with landmines.

NOTE: please use "back" on your browser to return to this Index
after visiting any link [or bookmark this page if preferred].
