Area 10 [archive] - BUILD YOUR OWN WEBSITE PART TEN |
| SETTING UP E-MAIL TO FAX GATEWAYS IN OUTLOOK EXPRESS |
To make any sense of this page, you'll need to have read Part 9 which gave you instructions for setting up multiple mailbox and associated Inbox Rules.
Setting up E-mail to Fax Gateways isn't particularly complex, not after the first time, anyway. We use "free" gateways kindly provided by TPC and Demon Internet: these allow you up to 15 sends per hour and a total of 25 over a week, which should be adequate for most people's requirements.
We have set our Inbox Rules up such that if an e-mail comes in for (say) a Charity in the Directory, one that doesn't have its own internet access yet but DOES have a fax machine, the e-mail is converted to a fax and goes out again automatically via TPC, on the next "send and receive".
To achieve this within Outlook Express, simply set up an Inbox Rule (as per Part 9) for the type of e-mail you wish to forward using a gateway.
Then, in the Properties box for that rule, type in the following under "Forward To" [enable the "Forward To" instruction, as per the others, by clicking on the little box next to it to put a tick in there] - type:
remote-printer.name_of_individual/name_of_organization@44telephonenumber.iddd.tpc.int
This is effectively an e-mail address: substitute the person's name you're addressing the fax to, with underlines where the spaces would be; forward slash (no spaces either side) before the name of the organization, then @ (no spaces either side) followed by 44 (UK country code) [substitute other country code as required, obviously] and the fax number of the person you're sending to [omit the initial zero] followed by .iddd.tpc.int .
When you use the gateway/s for the first time, you will receive a confirmation from TPC which tells you how to find their website where you can find further details of using their services. You will always receive confirmations from them about the progress of your e-mail to fax - whether it was sent, if so when; any problems encountered; and a summary of how many of your free e-mail to faxes you've used up over the last seven days. They also give details on their site about which areas of the world are accessible via their e-mail to fax gateway service.
Although everyone gets a facility of 25 per week, we try to use less than that (eg when sending out copies of our e-zine, PHC news) so as to allow for other e-mails which come in spontaneously from site visitors contacting charities who have gateway access set up via our site - so as not to go over our 25 free limit per week. You may wish to consider this aspect when setting up your own gateways.
