Build Your Own Website - even without previous Internet experience or training

Project HappyChild - linking children all across the world

Area 10 [archive]

Build Your Own Website!

Unlock your creativity .... building websites is a lot more fun than most people realise

If you're thinking about building your own website (but, like us, didn't have a clue where to start) - we have put a few simple notes on line to help you start pagebuilding.

If you're an experienced web-page-builder they're likely to be much too simplistic - the notes are written for people who have very little knowledge at all about page-building and want to know how to do every simple basic stage.

However, four years down the track, a "Traffic Building Guide" summary has now also been written, summarising the 14 factors which have been of primary relevance in generating the huge traffic flow at Project HappyChild [from zero to four million in four years], and this may be of more interest to established website-builders. Many of the other pages are still relevant however in terms of structuring your website for maximum efficiency - and simple guides to achieving things which may present difficulties for new website-builders, to begin with.

Pages now on line are as follows (click underlined words to access).

Part 1 Setting up the directory structure for your site on your hard drive.
Part 2 Preliminary notes on building a simple web page in Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 (the program we've found easiest to use - schools and registered charities can get this for Ł39 plus VAT and carriage).
Part 3 Building your first page in WordPerfect Suite 8 (including how to make an e-mail link for people to contact you directly from your home page).
Part 4 Adding colour, background wallpaper and graphics.
Part 5 Uploading your page to the Internet (using Cute FTP).
Part 6 Adding tables and hyperlinks to other areas of your site.
Part 7 Adding meta-tags (for the search engines).
Part 8 Choosing an Internet Service Provider.
Part 9 Setting up multiple mailboxes (in Outlook Express) - with the associated "Inbox Rules" to get your mail to drop into the right boxes.
Part 10 Setting up e-mail to fax gateways.
Part 11 Setting up Autoresponders.
Part 12 Other useful information.
Part 13 Michael Tipper's Guide to Mind Manager.
Part 14 Traffic Building Guide

Parts 1-12 should be enough to get you started on page building, even without manuals. We have tried out "Front Page" [Microsoft] but not the most recent version, and found that whilst we could do some of the items above easily, other items were more complex and difficult to fathom without a manual. So we have confined Parts 3-7 to "how to achieve in WordPerfect Suite 8" and hope they are presented in a sufficiently straightforward way to make your first steps in pagebuilding, easy ones.
