Andy: It was discovered some time after this question was originally received that these names are inaccurate - probably because before Gold & Silver came out in the USA and England, and Ruby & Sapphire the same, people were guessing at how the Japanese versions of the names would be represented in English. Andy: You can buy SUBSTITUTE (TM 50) in the CELADON Exchange Center (where you can exchange coins for prizes). It costs 7700 coins (50 coins $1000).

EXPLOSION [TM 47] - I think this is in the cave on the way to Indigo Plateau.

Andy: First of all, find it, then go and do the same things that you would if you were doing the MISSINGNO Cheat, hopefully TAUROS will appear on the side of CINNABAR ISLAND. Then, if you have already done the MASTER BALL multiplication cheat you can use that to catch TAUROS, or just do your best with the normal POKÉ BALLS.

Question: I have a son who is seven years old and a Pokémon fanatic (Gameboy). Now his whole work of two weeks just disappeared from one second to the other. The whole game got reset (blue 2x and yellow 1x). Do you know why this might have happened?

Andy: There are a couple of ways he might have wiped the game - (1) when the intro to the game has finished there are two options displayed (if he has a game started) - "Continue Game" and "New Game" (plus "Options"). If he happened to select "New Game" this would wipe the game in progress if he saved on the new game.

(2) The other way is he might have used a button combination which re-sets the game. When the title screen is shown, if he pressed up on the +Control pad while pressing SELECT and the B button, this would also re-set the game [this is shown somewhere around p13 of the manual].

Question: My son, Owen, who is 7 years old, received Pokémon yellow for Christmas. He is very enthusiastic but is disappointed that despite playing day in day out he has not yet been able to get past BROCK. We know WATER would work well but haven't been able to figure out a way of picking up any WATER Pokémon before PEWTER CITY. Any other ideas that would help?
PS We have enjoyed your website a lot, some of the tips are beyond us yet but the walk-through is great! Many thanks .....
Andy: It will take a fairly long time but it's well worth it. In VIRIDIAN FOREST, capture either a CATERPIE or a METAPOD. If you capture a CATERPIE you will need to evolve it into METAPOD and then BUTTERFREE, but if you are able to catch a METAPOD this will take less time.

Once you have got METAPOD from either catching him or evolving him from CATERPIE, he will not be able to attack because he is in the cocoon stage of his life. What you need to do is put him as your first Pokémon so that he starts the battle and will gain half the experience points from that particular enemy. Then you need to switch to your most powerful Pokémon and deal with the enemy you're fighting. This will become boring after a while but gradually METAPOD will gain more points, go up levels and evolve into BUTTERFREE.

Just keep going round VIRIDIAN FOREST until you have a BUTTERFREE. When your BUTTERFREE is at level 10 it will learn the attack called CONFUSION. Use this on BROCK and you should have earned yourself the Boulder Badge. If you are unlucky and your Pokémon all pass out or faint, I am sorry but you will just have to get your Pokémon up to higher levels. I myself found it tedious trying to get past BROCK when I first played on the yellow version. It's annoying that your starter Pokémon is ELECTRIC at the moment but it's very handy later on in the game.
