I found that instead of raising a caterpie to a butterfree, you can level up a nidoran until it learns double kick, making brock extremely easy to beat.

Pokérus (Pokémon+virus) is a very rare virus that appeared in Gold + Silver (we hadn't heard before that it was in emerald also). As far as we know it is / will be in Diamond and Pearl, though.
This is a "good virus" and can be passed on to others in your party - it helps a Pokémon get more effort points and reduces the number of battles required for the Pokémon to become fully trained. In G+S there was only a tiny chance (like 1 in 30,000) of catching Pokérus from a wild Pokémon in battle. If you trade a Pokémon with Pokérus to some other games, it won't infect other Pokémon there but stays infected itself, apparently - in G & S the virus can wear off after 24 hours but it may be slightly different in diamond and pearl.
