Travel to VIRIDIAN CITY, then travel up through it until you see an old man pacing backwards and forwards from left to right [the one who would not let you pass through at the beginning of your game]. So you know it is the right person, he will say that he has just had a coffee and he feels great ..... He will then ask you if you are in a hurry. First of all, say yes. Then talk to him again but this time say no, you are not in a hurry. He will then show you how to catch a Pokémon [WEEDLE]. Afterwards talk to him one more time and tell him that you are not in a hurry. Then fly to CINNABAR ISLAND. Travel to the right side of the island and use a WATER Pokémon that has learned SURF. Keep going up and down the right side of the island next to what looks like a dark blue strip with crosses on. Keep doing this until you run into a Pokémon which looks like a fuzzed graphic. Sometimes it will be called MISSINGNO. But sometimes it will not have a name, it will just be blurred. BEWARE! Do not catch this Pokémon because it can wipe your saved game. However if you do not catch it, everything will be okay. So just run away from this Pokémon. Once you have done this, whatever item you have on Item 6 of your item list will now be multiplied by a considerable amount, well over 100. This will be good for RARE CANDY for getting your Pokémon up levels, or you may wish to multiply the amount of your MASTER BALLS, which will catch Pokémon at any time. The way to tell whether you are running out of the item you have chosen to multiply is when the number you have left gets to 99, that is your last 99 so do not use the last one, i.e. you can do the cheat again. Also, if you are finding it hard to catch SAFARI ZONE Pokémon, go to the SAFARI ZONE and find the Pokémon you wish to catch. If you are not able to catch this Pokémon in the SAFARI ZONE, then do the cheat as above and apart from getting MISSINGNO, the Pokémon you want should appear after a while.

When you use the cheat to do the RARE CANDY trick [see Cheat No. 2001] you will run into GOLDUCK level 120-140 - you can catch it and use as many RARE CANDYs as you want on it.

How to get MEW ..... Go to the Pokémon Center near MOUNT MOON and buy a MAGIKARP. Take it to the Pokémon Daycare and leave it there until it gets to level 49 then feed it a RARE CANDY and it will evolve into a MEW!!! You can use this in Red, Blue, and Yellow.
| Andy: We can't confirm yet that this works, and would appreciate some more
feedback from visitors.
Update: We've heard from No.1 WizardFan saying this cheat does not work. So far we have had one person (Cameron B.) write in saying that it does work, plus the person who gave us the cheat in the first place. However we've tried out the cheat here and it didn't work, and we've been advised by Tony B. that it didn't work for him either [see #2072]. Tip - save just before you get to Level 49, so that you can keep trying if we get any new information about this cheat - however, see our MEW page also. Later: see also # 3017. From our own experiences, and from those of the many other people who wrote in, we have with some regret now had to put this cheat in the "RUBBISH" category. So don't waste your time trying it :) and our thanks to all visitors who helped rule this one out.

Cheat/Tip/Shortcut: Get MEWTWO - After you have gotten all eight of your badges you need to go beat the Pokémon league. The credits will roll and then the menu pops up again. DO NOT RESET THE GAME!!!! Go to CERULEAN CITY, go north to the bridge where you faced five trainers before the path to Bill's house. Turn left and there will be a large area of water. SURF until you get to a cave. You will find MEWTWO in that cave.
| Andy: Yes, that is correct, but I would call the Pokémon League the Elite Four in these versions because that is all you really have to beat, besides your rival. | |||

Cheat/Tip/Shortcut: Easy way to CINNABAR ISLAND. First get FLY and SURF. Then fly to Pallet Town. SURF on the water. You will be at CINNABAR ISLAND without going through Seafoam Islands!
| Andy: Good tip, this is quicker than SURFing down from Fuschia City to Seafoam Islands, navigating your way through the caves and then SURFing left to CINNABAR ISLAND. So that you know, once you have been to CINNABAR ISLAND, you can fly there from then on. | |||

Cheat/Tip/Shortcut: TRADE a Pokémon to somebody, TRADE it to the red/blue. Do the MISSINGNO Cheat with that Pokémon and it will grow 100 levels, the highest it can go to is 251 or else it will go back to level 0. Keep up the good work on your website.
| Andy: We would appreciate confirmation of this cheat, but so you know, when I used RARE CANDY on a Pokémon that was already above Level 100 (i.e. MISSINGNO cheat), I was able to feed it RARE CANDY until it was at level 255, then it went down to level zero. | |||

Cheat/Tip/Shortcut: The Cheat # 2003, the one about the GOLDUCK, I think I have an answer. Try starting with a different starting Pokémon [BULBASAUR, SQUIRTLE, CHARMANDER].
| Andy: Good comment, I'll try this. When I first played the game and found the cheat, I was getting CLEFABLE and MEWTWO above the level 100 mark in the same game, but when I re-set it (I'm not sure if I chose the same starter Pokémon) I only got MEWTWO. Cheat/Tip/Shortcut: I found out you don't need to talk to the old man three times, only once, and say no, I'm not in a hurry. I also found out your sixth item gets to nine million, it's not unlimited. | |||

Cheat/Tip/Shortcut: This is my shortcut for people who have chosen CHARMANDER for their first Pokémon. First when you go in to VIRIDIAN FOREST, try not to be seen by the bug catchers. Find and capture a CATERPIE and start training it up. Since it's a BUG Pokémon it grows fast: when you think it's ready for battle, fight the bug catchers that you went past. Once CATERPIE has evolved into METAPOD and then BUTTERFREE it should automatically learn CONFUSION. BUTTERFREE is very good against ROCK Pokémon with its CONFUSION and should easily defeat BROCK, even so you might want to train BUTTERFREE some more.

due to ongoing problems with mail getting through to here, we've made a * mail form * you can use to write to us. In the years since the Cheats area at Andy's Guide to Pokémon first started, there have been many mail problems - and quite a few computer crashes - and we'd like to say sorry to anyone whose messages have got lost along the way .... just remember you can *always* re-send, and hopefully now that we have a more guaranteed way for info to reach us here, we'll find a way to get most or all of the genuine info on line :) We very much appreciate the support that all of you give this site. |
