Kathryn Watts reporting worldwide
[Article 2] [page 6 of Kathryn's pages]]
Education yields benefits in almost every sphere of human activity. A purely
economic analysis shows that the rates of return from education can be very high,
between 10% and 20%. The rates compare well with other investment
opportunities in Africa which show an average return of 7%. Benefits also come
from the change in social attitudes that education brings.
Since independence African countries have invested heavily in education, with some impressive results. Primary school enrolment rose from 12 million in 1960 to over 50 million in 1983 and the proportion of literate adults rose from under 10% of the population to over 40% in the same period. These achievements are under threat though because of the economy and the projected growth in the number of school children. The pace of population growth is such, that more than half of the people of sub-Saharan Africa are under 20. Schoolchildren today are the major target of family planning education, with the proportion of children in school increasing fast. Primary education is one of Africa's success stories, with the average number of girls enrolled up from 30% in 1965 to 68% in 1984. The figure for Tanzania is now 84% and for Zambia 95%. The education in India too has improved, particularly in subjects like maths. So the future of education in these underdeveloped countries may hold some hope for the future of these children. |
