Appeals and Projects helping kids across the world

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

Hi there! A huge welcome to all our new subscribers. We've been inundated with mail for the last few weeks, traffic levels have been off the scale and there have been major practical difficulties to deal with, such as our ISP servers going down (very rare these days!) and of course the huge quantities of virus-carrying mail circulating across the world.

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

VIRUSES: We're being increasingly swamped by copies of the "Klez" virus/worm. We're operating without the "preview pane" [to disable this in Outlook Express on your own computer, use View-Layout and uncheck the preview-pane box) but virus-carrying e-mails are now at such a high level that we're unable to leave Outlook Express open on an ongoing basis, and have to check out the mail on the ISP portal first. Anything up to 98% of our incoming mail is virus-carrying and the e-mails often appear to originate from non-genuine sources (eg from someone in a virus-carrying computer's address book).

We'd recommend to all our visitors that no attachments are opened (even if the mail appears to come from someone you know, or the subject line looks familiar) without checking with the sender first. Disabling the preview pane will prevent the attachment from trying to open automatically. We've taken the route now of deleting all mail with attachments around the 124kb level and above (Klez is usually around the 124 mark, though other current virus-carriers vary) and obviously removing all deleted mail from the Deleted Items folder also.

See the Latest News page for links to Sophos and Norton instructions for removing the Klez virus for your computer, if you're unlucky enough to take this on board.

ACCELERATED LEARNING: Michael Tipper's feature article for April, the "Brain Gym", is now on line, following on from his March article about teaching nine to ten-year-olds in the pilot programme for the Education Action Zone in Greenwich. Michael's schedule is currently very hectic but I spoke to him yesterday whilst he was in a traffic jam on a motorway somewhere near London (he's doing masses of presentations to schools just now) and he's hoping to send the May article through some time over the next few days.

SCHOOLS INTERCHANGE: Our thanks to Linda Duffy, the main Web Editor for Dorset LEA, for forwarding updated link page details for the Dorset Schools Information System - see our Schools England A-M page, for Dorset]. As commented on the Schools Interchange listing here, the Dorset Schools Information site is stunningly well-organised with details ranging from hours of opening, age range and number of pupils, to street maps and aerial photos of schools, as well as website addresses, e-mail addresses and Ofsted reports. Includes links to schools for children with special needs.

NEW PAGEBUILDING: In response to numerous requests over the years, we've finally put on line a comprehensive summary of the techniques developed at Project HappyChild for building website traffic, as well as detailing free/shareware software used to streamline the maintenance of the whole site, along the way.

Much of our traffic comes via the huge quantities of links from other sites on the Internet (for which our unremitting thanks!) and from word-of-mouth recommendations, but a substantial proportion comes from the search engines also and the structure of the site has evolved over the last four years to be as "search-engine friendly" as possible - as well as accessible to the maximum number of browsers, given that our visitors come from a wide range of countries with very different levels of computer capabilities.

Much of what's written is fairly unconventional - and all of it very low-tech! - but regardless the traffic-building tips are considerably more "proven" than most of what you will find on the Internet today. The Traffic Building Guide has been added to Area 10, "Build Your Own Website".

HUMANITARIAN AID TRANSPORT SERVICES: An updated page including new contact information has just gone on line for H.A.T.S, who offer excellent rates for transporting everything from a few boxes to massive containerloads, wherever help is needed in the world. Contact them for a free quotation - click here or telephone 07711 786480.

We would just like to thank H.A.T.S. and our two other advertisers, Pathways Development Group in Seattle and Michael Tipper, whose ongoing advertising fees help to keep this website on line. Your support for our advertisers is always appreciated!

GENERAL EVENTS: A direct-line telephone number has been added for Events bookings for the Rhys Daniels Trust whose forthcoming activities include the Santa Clara European Golf event (June), the Bristol Summer Ball in July, the Pauline Quirke Ryder Cup Experience in August, and the Butterfly Ball at the London Hilton in October. For details of these and other events please see the General Events and Sponsored Events pages.

NEWS ARCHIVES: The last remaining "admin" task to complete the cohesion of site as a whole [and to free up more time for pagebuilding] has been to archive all the virus-related info on the News pages, to reduce the overall length of the current page and to make information on all current viruses easily accessible. All News Archive pages [see table at the top of the Latest News page] now carry links to other dates in the sequence along with archived Newsletters, and to the writings of Kathryn Watts, who wrote the "Roving Reporter" pages for Project HappyChild during her time at University.

With all that's going on here at a practical level, we've had to re-schedule the pagebuilding of the remainder of the Supplementary Resources, which will now take place between now and Xmas 2002. The most urgent priority is the completion of the French vocab pages at Freeway, but with the currently-accelerating overall site traffic levels it's difficult to plan ahead and we're taking things one day at a time. Thank you all for your support!

Penny.
