Project HappyChild NEWS 1st January 2002 [for ongoing updates, see Latest Site News] |
A very happy New Year to all our readers, with many thanks for support received in recent months.
![]() ![]() 2001 was an awesome and unforgettable year - our "Twin Towers" page will remain on line here as a permanent reminder of the events of 11/9. We trust that 2002 will mark the beginning of the laying of the foundations of a more integrated and balanced society worldwide. |

RESOURCES: Last month, Jonathan Hare at Scott-Grant in Manchester made the offer of a second hand telephone system - GPT DXE2470 switch with 17 standard and 3 executive handsets, extra extension cards and memory, 10 years old but fully maintained (posted on the Surplus Resources page).
This generous offer was taken up by Child Advocacy International and we're delighted to report that the telephone system has now been forwarded to a hospital in Cameroon. Child Advocacy International is now able to accept computer ink cartridges - for details please see the Resources Required page. CAI has opened a mobile clinic and mini-hospital for seriously-ill children and mothers giving birth in the Afghan refugee camps. Funded for just 6 months at present, money is urgently needed for extra drugs and supplies - telephone donations accepted on (UK) 01782 712599 - lines open 09.00-17.00 GMT Monday to Friday. |
| ACCELERATED LEARNING - We're pleased to report that Michael Tipper's feature article for January 2002 is already on line - entitled "Some Questions on Learning from our Visitors". Many thanks to the large numbers of people who e-mail Michael on a vast array of topics; although he rarely has time to provide individual replies these days, due to work commitments, the primary themes of interest to visitors are comprehensively addressed in this thought-provoking series of Feature Articles. |
| APPEALS: Our thanks to all visitors to Project HappyChild who responded to the Appeal (on site from December 1999) from Scott McDonald, Task Force Falcon, USA, for supplies, such as pens, pencils, crayons, paper for the school sponsored by the 709th MP Battalion in Kosovo. Scott's letter of 6th December 2001 is included on the previous Appeal page. |
| PROJECT HAPPYCHILD DIRECTORY - Karen Simkins at Child Poverty Action Group has advised changes in contact details - if you have a cached or printed-out version of the Directory you may wish to update this. |
Trust everyone has enjoyed a peaceful and happy Christmas! Whilst there's been some "time off" here, the traffic levels dipped only briefly (to a low of just over 2000 on Christmas Day itself) and there has, as usual, been a lot going on in the background, much of which never reaches the site pages. Admin-wise things are pretty clear now, and we're just in the process of scheduling the pagebuilding for the next six months. We still have around 1000 pages to build for the supplementary resources - French, English, Sol's guide to Harry Potter and Andy's Guide to Pokémon. Traffic levels are getting so high (average 9000/day in early December) that it's becoming more and more difficult to fit in resource pagebuilding as well as the ongoing admin - so we have to focus primarily on the remaining new pages, just for six months, to safeguard the long-term effectiveness of the site as a whole. By summer 2002 we would very much like to be in the position of having all the major pagebuilding completed, firstly so that the site can be fully integrated and visitors will be able to locate whatever they came in for, but also secondly so that if something major needs to be organised, the "decks will be clear" to deal with it. Accordingly we ask all of you to bear with us if e-mails take a little longer than usual to be answered! - and any non-scheduled pagebuilding will probably need a two-week lead time rather than the usual 2-3 days. Charities in the Directory will have priority for General Events and Sponsored Events for 2002, but other than that the 2-week upload factor will have to apply fairly consistently. |
| YEAR 2002 EVENTS - As always at this time of year, the General Events and Sponsored Events calendars are somewhat bare of events for the next 12 months (apart from a great many Marathons, so far!) - it would be greatly appreciated if all Directory Charities could forward details of planned events at their earliest convenience, so that we can block-build the pages and get all events on line as soon as possible. |
| Over the next six months, the Latest News page on site is likely to be the most up-to-date guide as to any major developments [and to how the pagebuilding is progressing]. We'll circulate details of genuine viruses wherever possible, although hopefully these will be less prevalent this year.
There isn't likely to be any spare time for "site publicity" for the forseeable future, so if any of you have chance to print out the "publicity page" and post it up on a noticeboard somewhere, this would be greatly appreciated. Wishing you all a happy and fulfilling 2002, Penny. ****************************************************************** |
