Project HappyChild NEWS December 2001 [for ongoing updates, see Latest Site News] |
Hi there! As usual this has been an action-packed month here - we reached the three-million-visits mark on 5th November, total figures for the month being over 230,000 visits, our highest ever by some 25,000.
"Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone" lived up to all expectations when we saw the film on 11th November, and we're delighted to say we've been able to make definable progress on Solomon's Guide to Harry Potter on the site here, with Chapter 2 details - characters, spells, items, creatures, locations etc. - now on line. |
SURPLUS RESOURCES - our thanks to Jonathan Hare at Scott-Grant (Manchester, England) for the offer of a telephone system to a worthy cause - see the main Surplus Resources page.
RESOURCES REQUIRED - our thanks to Jenny Zienau at the National Childbirth Trust for advising us that their recycling centre can now accept mobile phones, printer, toner and inkjet cartridges - full details including freepost address and free UK collection are given on our Resources Required page. |
CHRISTMAS CARDS - The Children's Trust now has Christmas cards available, linked directly from our Charity Catalogues page. The entry for Children In Crisis cards has now been updated and cards benefitting a number of charities in the Project HappyChild Directory are now listed in the Shop area of this site.
GUESTBOOK - Two more letters have been added to the Guestbook, the first from Harriet Iga in Uganda, now unemployed and struggling to provide for the daughter she adopted last year - details added also to the Appeals Uganda page, the second from Tracylee, a disabled single parent in Las Vegas, Nevada, struggling to provide the basic necessities for her four children - details added also to the Appeals USA page. We've just received an appeal from Nigeria about help required for medical costs for two children badly burned in the explosion of a kerosene cooking stove - we hope to be able to add details to the Guestbook shortly. |
SCHOOLS INTERCHANGE - our thanks to Lesley Duff and Alistair Mackenzie at NGFL Scotland for advising us of a broken SCET link and that Scottish Schools Online, a database directory of Scottish schools, is due to be launched in December 2001, including contact details for every school and, where appropriate, website and e-mail addresses and information about the availability of videoconferencing - details and link on the Schools Scotland page.
REFERRAL SCHEME - Our ISP, PlusNet, has recently launched a new scheme where you can sign up for as little as £6.99 per month [up to 20 hours weekly access] with masses of web space and facilities - and by referring friends and colleagues you can actually profit from the scheme (eg some types of business referrals would credit you from £2.50 to £6 each per month). Click here for more details. BADTRANS VIRUS - The last days of this month have been marked by an avalanche of virus-carrying e-mails - mostly BadTrans, but some Nimda, some Magistr, some Sircam and even one LoveBug. We trust everyone on the mailing list received the warning e-mail sent out a few days ago about BadTrans, as this one can install itself so easily on your machine. Removal and disinfection details for all of these are still on the Latest News page. |
ACCELERATED LEARNING - Michael Tipper's December article has just arrived, entitled "Encouraging Positive Thinking, Self Confidence and Self-Belief in Children and Young People" - this will be added to the Feature Articles area over the next day or two.
And finally - in this time of continued world unrest after the Terrorist Attacks on the USA - we'd like to refer you to the recent update from James Beale at Ockenden International, the only British charity working in Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan - help is urgently needed to support the ordinary Afghan people caught up in this conflict - click here to find out more about how you can help. Wishing you a peaceful and happy December and a joyful Christmas and New Year, Penny. ****************************************************************** |
