Appeals and Projects helping kids across the world

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

Hi everyone! A huge welcome to all our new subscribers and to those who have joined the main mailing list from "Andy's Guide to Pokémon" and "Sol's Guide to Harry Potter".

There's been so much going on this summer that it's difficult to know where to begin ..... maybe start with Michael Tipper's pages on Accelerated Learning which have been upgraded and integrated to allow us to include a new major area, Feature Articles.

Michael took his usual two month sabbatical (June/July) this summer, and the first Feature Article went on line on 1st August - "How to memorise long pieces of text" [with particular reference to the Qur'an and the Bible].

This new area of the site is proving very popular and we're delighted to say the September article is already on line, "The Mind Map Organic Study Technique", a subject specifically requested by one of our visitors.

We're still receiving lots of enquiries re the World Memory Championships - Michael no longer organises these due to his ever-growing work commitments but we've updated his reports on the WMC in 1999 and 2000 to include details of who to contact if you'd like to be a contestant, arbiter or judge in future championships.

GUESTBOOK - We've received quite a few entries for the Guestbook, including one from Fathima in Sri Lanka, looking to make contact with other parents or organizations helping children with learning difficulties / ADD, one from Kristin at Cross Cultural Solutions, a leading volunteer organization in the USA which is involved in a number of projects with children in various countries, and some delightful comments on the site from Lucy Pedrick (UK) - see the main Guestbook page for these.

Many of you will recall the Appeal in the Guestbook back in July of last year, from Eugenia in Russia, requesting help for her five-year-old daughter who needed hearing aids - we're delighted to say that this appeal has been more than fulfilled by a lady in America (who has asked to remain anonymous).

NEW PAGEBUILDING: We've received many enquiries as to when further pages will be on line for Pokémon, Harry Potter and French worksheets - new pagebuilding is scheduled to start again on Wednesday 5th September, all going well. Meanwhile we've recently been able to restore the links to USA Universities in Schools Interchange (the previous resource had entirely disappeared) - the new resource also lists universities in further areas such as Guam, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, which we'll link in due course from the Americas page. The "Latest Site News" page has been archived up to the end of April 2001, and there have been a number of additions/amendments to the Directory, Appeals, Syndromes, Resources and General Events pages (more details below).

Meanwhile I'd like at this point to extend my personal thanks to Kevin Revill who has created a .cgi script for Project HappyChild, to allow us to send the monthly Newsletter out to subscribers direct from here, now that the free Microsoft ListBot service has been discontinued. This makes a very real difference for us, given the size of the mailing list, and on a practical level things should be very much easier from now on. Kevin helped Project HappyChild a great deal in the early stages, back in 1998 (when I was a complete Internet novice!) and also put the very first edition of the Project HappyChild Directory on line. More details on our Sponsors page.

APPEALS & EVENTS: The Foundation for Mercy & Sharing has been added to the page for Appeals & Projects in Haiti - "representing 70% of the 6 million children on this island, Haiti's children endure illiteracy, child slavery and high mortality rates" - this is a sobering website. Please take a look if you have time.

On a brighter note, there has been some heartwarming news from the Betesda - Piatra Neamt Appeal to help homeless children in Romania - seven children are now accommodated on site in the renovated house. They still have a great of money to raise (around Ł30,000) to be able to accommodate all 24 teenagers, but with help they'll get there ..... latest scheduled fundraising event is "Rodeo for Romania!" on 19th October 2001 - see the General Events Calendar for more details.

Other events added recently include a Gala Charity Night in aid of suffering children around the world, at the Liverpool Olympia on 2nd November 2001; a mini-conference in Richmond, England, on SEN tribunals - the massive changes effective from 1st September, special educational needs and disability act, including assessment and statementing - date of event is 15th September; and a conference "The Black Hole of Trauma" in Chicago, in October 2001, featuring Bessel van der Kolk, MD - please see the General Events page for details of all of these. The Chicago conference has been set up by The Los Angeles Centre for Traumatic Stress and Sudden Bereavement (children and adolescents), which has now been added to the Syndromes Links Index.

DIRECTORY CHARITIES:We're delighted to say that The Sick Children's Trust Major Appeal to raise over Ł1 million for the building of Acorn House at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and Treetop House at Sheffield Children's Hospital was a wonderful success and both houses are now open to families.

SCT are now in negotiations with other hospitals regarding the development of new houses as well as continuing to run the eight existing 'Homes from Home' for families of children who are seriously ill. The entry for The Sick Children's Trust in the Project HappyChild Directory [1072] has now been updated, along with a changed e-mail address and a link to their new website, where you'll find details (and pictures) of the homes which are now open.

Also on the theme of hospitals,Action for Sick Children [1008] have a new website and e-mail address which have now been linked from their Directory entry. For over 37 years they've been working hard to improve the services and attitudes to the way children are treated when they are unwell - in hospital, at home and in the community. Details of "Herbie's Heroes" and their educational videos to help take away the fears and preconceptions that many children have about going to hospital, have also been added to our booklists page.

We're delighted to welcome CACHE [The Council for Awards in Children's Care and Education] to the Directory [No. 1052]. CACHE now incorporates CEYA, NNEB and NAMCW (many of you will have seen NAMCW in the Directory previously). CACHE believes that all child carers should be required to obtain a minimum level of training, and are actively committed to raising the quality and professionalism of child care. To reach their Directory entry, please click here.

BABY CLOTHES - Last of the new additions to the site is - finally! - a resource for baby clothes. We get regular enquiries from people in different parts of the country, asking where they can usefully pass on children's outgrown clothing, to help disadvantaged kids in some way. We've just discovered that the National Childbirth Trust have a listing for sales of Nearly New children and baby items, where both sellers and buyers are welcome. For more details see the Surplus Resources or Resources Required pages.

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

Of course the over-riding theme this summer has been viruses .... two major alerts quite so close together (and not including Code Red!) is to say the least unusual, but we hope none of you got caught by either of these. We're still receiving intermittent copies of Sircam (about a dozen a day) but the magistr virus (though at No. 2 in the listings) doesn't seem to have made so much of an impact. Our thanks to the many people who wrote back to us after the virus warnings were sent out from here.
