Project HappyChild NEWS 1st April 2001 [for ongoing updates, see Latest Site News] |
| Hi there! Well, this has been an eventful month, by anyone's standards. Over 200,000 visits (205,000) for the first time in a calendar month (about 25,000 up on last month) and e-mails on everything under the sun. A spell of illness here in the midst of it all, which combined with the residual backlog after the ISP problems has led to something of a backlog, but site uploads should be up to date again in a few days. |
| NEW PAGEBUILDING - In amidst the chaos which has typified most of this month, the new pagebuilding has gone ahead more or less as scheduled, with over 100 pages added to the site as a whole. We're delighted to say the first set of new free-to-print French pages are now on line - 60 pages of verbs, être, aller, faire, with separate worksheets for the various tenses, and also the templates for -ER, -RE and -IR verbs with 9 separate tense pages for each. Our thanks to Shaidi Khan who has offered help with preparation of comprehensive vocab lists to speed up the completion of this area.
42 pages have also been added to "Solomon's Guide to The Magical World of Harry Potter", to divide specific areas into separate sections for the different books, to avoid visitors inadvertently accessing references to books in the series they haven't yet read. This area is now fully mapped out so that chapter references can be added at a more leisurely pace once the bulk of the French area is completed. The last of the supplementary resources, "Andy's Guide to Pokémon", has been inundated with kids visiting looking for guides to the gold and silver versions due out next week in the UK. We're hoping the guides will be up by the middle of this month, as this area brings huge numbers of children in developed countries into contact with Project HappyChild. |
| GIVE WATER FREE ***** We sent out an e-mail to the Newsletter mailing list on 9th March about a charity called Water Aid, who benefit from a site at http://www.givewater.org which states "every 8 seconds a child in the developing world will die from disease caused by unsafe water" and that if they received 250,000 clicks over the next three months Thames Water would give Ł100,000 to spend on water and sanitation in the developing world. The site allowed one click per day - clicking on the lady with the pot on her head, where her sash said "click here" - generated number of clicks to date on the sash, in the same place, on the follow-up page. The number of visits to their site stood at 86951 on the morning of 9th March 2001, when we e-mailed everyone - the figure of 250,000 clicks was reached about three days later (so thanks to everyone who went and visited!). Thames Water have apparently now offered a further Ł50,000 for Water Aid if they can reach *two million* clicks [slightly lower figure per click this time!] - please go back for a few days, if you can, just to get this money where it's needed.
Incidentally thanks to everyone who wrote back re the Nigerian hoax e-mails (also mentioned on our mailing of 9/3) - apparently quite a few of you received these. We checked out the Nigerian High Commission site which did carry warnings about hoaxes and spoke to the High Commissioner's office about the two received here, which we were asked to forward to them for further investigation. |
| PROJECT HAPPYCHILD DIRECTORY - As you'll know it's planned to add more entries to the Directory - this has had to be deferred this month due to sheer pressure of other matters, particularly the illness factor, but we hope to progress this early in April. There are also one or two amendments scheduled to existing entries which have had to be put on hold, but which should be on line in a few days.
Meanwhile one amendment which made it through earlier in the month was The TWINS AND MULTIPLE BIRTHS ASSOCIATION (TAMBA) which has changed e-mail address - details have been updated in the Project HappyChild Directory (1006). If you have a cached or printed-out version of the Directory, you may wish to update this. |
| GUESTBOOK - Three further entries have been added to the Guestbook - an Appeal from a juggler asking for help to set up a circus school for deprived children in Bathore, Albania; an e-mail from a South African school governor planning to move to Canada and wishing to make contact with other ex-South Africans now living there, and one about the free-to-print guide to building a website, on line at this site - see Guestbook.
Subsequently we received an e-mail from Katarzyna (Kate) Wargan, an official agent for the project in the US, as well as one of the "outside" coordinators, giving more details on the timeframe for this project which is scheduled to run right through till the end of 2002, expanding across the Balkan countries. The success of this project will depend greatly on people with knowledge/experience in teaching circus and other performance skills giving up their time to go and help, so if you know anyone with these particular skills, please do pass on details of this project to them. Funding is also sought from anyone who supports what the project is setting out to achieve - see the Guestbook entry. |
| ACCELERATED LEARNING: Despite the complexities of keeping things on schedule this month, Michael Tipper's April articles on Accelerated Learning are now on line (early!) and also we've just uploaded chapter 3 of "How to Run a Successful Car Wash Fundraiser", the third instalment of Lance Winslow III's highly successful book which has helped people to raise over one million dollars a year for worthy causes. Do take a look at this one, it has some highly innovative ideas and you can see why this well-researched book brings a whole new dimension to fundraising. |
| And finally ..... 1st April has come round again and this year marks 12 years since the original concept of Project HappyChild [see site history]. As many of you know the project has only really taken shape on the Internet these last three years, but my thanks to everyone who's been a part of that and made it possible for so many children to become linked worldwide.
All help in publicising Project HappyChild is immensely valued. Penny. ****************************************************************** |
