Project HappyChild NEWS 1st January 2001 [for ongoing updates, see Latest Site News] |
| This month we're delighted to say that the first chapter of "How to
run a Successful Car Wash Fundraiser" has gone on line at Project
HappyChild. We were contacted a while back by Lance Winslow III,
founder of The Car Wash Guys, a mega-successful US firm, offering
us the rights to serialise his book free on our site. This acclaimed
book has helped people to raise over one million dollars a year for
worthy causes - we're including it in the "General Fundraising Ideas"
area.
We'd like to thank Lance for this extraordinary gesture - we'll be adding a chapter of the book each month from now until June 2001, and hope it helps many of you in your fund-raising for kids in need. |
| ACCELERATED LEARNING - We're pleased to report that Michael Tipper's January 2001 articles are already on line - this ever-growing resource is increasingly popular and the amount of usable info it contains is probably unmatched anywhere else on the Internet. This month's Memory Training article is "An Introduction to Speed Reading", the Book Review is about "Emotional Intelligence", this month's Great Mind is Lise Meitner, the mnemonic is about Using a Screwdriver, and the Amazing Brain fact a thought-provoking assessment of "Impulse Control and its effects on Intelligence". |
| LEND A HAND - Ockenden International, who help vulnerable refugees across the world who have lost their homes after famine, war etc. are asking school pupils to help by becoming "Target 24 Fundraisers" - this is a delightful initiative that we hope a lot of schools may wish to get involved with. You'll find details on the link from Ockenden International's entry in the Project HappyChild Directory. |
| GUESTBOOK - Our thanks to Michelle Lewis for a delightful e-mail which came in just before Christmas from Mongolia, where our free-to-print Maths worksheets are now being used to help street children. Michelle's e-mail has been added to the website Guestbook. |
| FOCUS - With the growing reservoir of info on playgrounds and
playing fields in the FOCUS area, we have added details of Kidsactive
- play and opportunity for disabled children. Kidsactive (whose
Information Service deals with over 2000 enquiries a year on all
aspects of play for disabled children) is listed in the Project
HappyChild Directory (this charity was previously known as HAPA) and
operates a national database of contacts and organisations in the play
and disability fields. They also provide a number of publications and
fact sheets, and details have been added to our booklists page.
Kidsactive runs six adventure playgrounds in the London area for disabled children and their friends, and additional funds for the general running of their playgrounds are always much appreciated. You'll find a link to their website and updated contact details in their Directory entry. Also on the FOCUS page we have retained the details of solo skipper Vinny Lauwers' landmark epic voyage around the world in the year 2000 [regular Newsletter readers will know that Vinny is a paraplegic who undertook the voyage to raise funds for disabled and disadvantaged kids]. We're delighted to say that Vinny and his girlfriend Jacquie were married during December, in Port Douglas; click here for some nice photos and his diary entry. We're leaving details of this world-first voyage up on the site for now, so that people can stay in touch with what Vinny's doing - he still hasn't recovered entirely from the after-effects of his gruelling trip but it's hoped that his world speaking tour can be scheduled soon and that the documentary about his voyage will be available in due course. |
| YEAR 2001 EVENTS - As always at this time of year, the General
Events and Sponsored Events calendars are somewhat bare - we'd like
to thank those organizations who have already forwarded details of
scheduled events for 2001 and these will be added within the next
week or two, as soon as the pagebuilding schedule allows. It would be
greatly appreciated if all Directory Charities could forward details of
scheduled events at their earliest convenience, so that we can block-build the pages and get all events on line as soon as possible,
particularly in view of the increasing traffic to the site.
In which connection we'd like to say a special thank you to the students of Nottingham University who wrote to many of the charities in the Directory with respect to "Golden Bond" places for the London Marathon next year - support for the charities in the Directory is always much appreciated. |
| SITE UPGRADES - The last couple of weeks have been largely taken
up with some very necessary upgrades across the website to improve
overall cohesion and make it easier for new visitors to find the many
different areas of the Project HappyChild site. The navigation table
on the main Welcome page has been updated, and a modified version
has now replaced the previous blue-and-white navigation table on main
pages across the website as a whole.
Judging by the vastly-accelerating traffic this is bearing real dividends, especially when new visitors come in via the search engines and are able to discover much more about the site content on their first visit - the translation pages have been similarly updated and we're also seeing a growing usage of the InterTran facility on the main Welcome page which allows pages to be translated into an amazing 24 languages. We'll be liaising with InterTran shortly about the possibility of including this facility on more pages - also we need to look at the html of their links and the welcome page navigation table as we're finding one or the other doesn't always download correctly, please let us know if you experience similar problems! |
| And finally - our free-to-print guide to "Building your
own Website" has been updated (briefly) with a link to
a free search engine submission service as well as a
program which allows block modifications of html
across many pages [the only thing that makes this huge
website able to be maintained in the way it is, without the use of
frames]. Those of you interested in
accessing this free software will find the link at the end of Part 12 of
the Guide.
Wishing you a dynamic and rewarding 2001, Penny. ****************************************************************** |
