Project HappyChild NEWS 1st December 2000 [for ongoing updates, see Latest Site News] |
| Hi everyone! Thanks to all who have visited this month, we logged up
173,000 for the month as a whole, 23,000 up on last month's record
150,000 visits. So the counter's comfortably over the million mark
now, which we reached three days ahead of schedule, on 6th
November 2000.
It's been a complex month here as our ISP has been upgrading the FTP equipment and we've been able to upload pages only intermittently, as some of you will know - we still can't do any block uploading but most of the new info has been able to go on line. Lots happening, as usual! |
| ACCELERATED LEARNING - Michael Tipper's December articles are already in place - this month's book review is "13-19 - a parent's guide to understanding the teenage years", the Amazing Brain fact is about the differences between men and women, this month's Great Mind is Socrates, the mnemonic is about Spelling and the main article is entitled "Mind Mapping for Young Children". |
| FOCUS - A major addition this month has been the inclusion of the National Playing Fields Association, an organization we have long wanted to add to the site. Some of you may have come across NPFA whilst reading Michael Caine's book "Not many people know that!" - their database of fields under threat in the UK makes sobering reading. Their website has a great deal of info on all aspects of playing fields and playgrounds, as well as the relevant safety regulations, links to grants/trusts, and help on looking after your field or pitch - see the FOCUS page for more details. |
| DIRECTORY CHARITIES - Also on the subject of play, we now have a
direct e-mail address for PLAYLINK, which helps people set up
adventure playgrounds for kids, and also helps schools to improve
their playgrounds.
There have been a number of other changes to the Directory this month: Autism London, supporting families and individuals affected by Autism, Asperger Syndrome etc. have modified their contact details and now also have a website which includes their London helpline number; Lifeline Network International (helping in the rehabilitation of child soldiers) has a new e-mail address; and I CAN [the national charity for children and young people with speech and language difficulties, has a new e-mail address and website link from their entry in the Directory. The Child Poverty Action Group has handbooks on Welfare Benefits and Child Support, available at greatly reduced prices for benefit claimants (see the Booklists page). CPAG also sells Christmas Cards, now included on the Catalogues page in the Project HappyChild Shop. Christmas Cards are now also available from Children in Crisis , depicting a delightful scene of children learning at Dritog School, China - see their cards page for a picture of the cards and an order form. The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust, which provides riding for children with special needs and disabilities, using specially selected donkeys from those rescued by the Donkey Sanctuary, have advised us that their Leeds Centre is now established and is fundraising for a mobile unit to visit schools, groups, day centres and hospitals - please see their appeal page in our UK Appeals area. The National Council for One Parent Families (NCOPF) now have a website launched by world-famous author and single parent JK Rowling, who has decided to become an Ambassador for One Parent Families and has made a substantial donation to NCOPF. A link to their new website and e-mail address have been added to NCOPF's entry in the Directory. |
| SCHOOLS INTERCHANGE - We've been able to locate details of
Schools and Universities in Israel and Palestine, which have now been
added to the Schools Israel page, along with a link to the Israeli
Ministry of Education, and our thanks to Asif, webmaster at Africa-Online, for details of a school in Malawi, a country which doesn't as
yet have its own school net - see Schools Malawi.
Thanks go also to Loraine Rossiter, Technical Services Manager at Cheshire County Council, for details of "SALT" (Support Access for Learners and Teachers) which has a complete list of all Cheshire schools and direct links to all the schools websites currently set up - see Schools England counties A-M - and to Christopher Coyle, Principal Officer, Intranet Development, Edinburgh for forwarding a modified URL for the new listing of Edinburgh Schools websites on the Edinburgh Grid for Learning - see Schools Scotland. |
| FREE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES - Our thanks to Murray Kimber,
A/g Assistant Secretary, Literacy & Special Programmes, Dept. of
Education in Australia, for forwarding details of EDNA which has now
been added to our Index of Free Educational Resources worldwide
[just below the link to the Parliament of Australia, in the general
resources table].
This month the first chapter pages / interlinks have been added to “The Magical World of Harry Potter” - this area of the site is generating a huge amount of interest and bringing a great many children into contact with Project HappyChild. Building it however is a major undertaking [because of the complex interplay of characters, events, locations, spells etc.] and it’s likely that it will take the greater part of 2001 for this area to be thoroughly researched and pagebuilt, if it’s to provide the quality of resource we aim for. Meanwhile “Andy’s Guide to Pokémon” is nearing completion and we’re hoping this will be fully on line by the end of December, leaving 2001 entirely free for building of the new French area, Harry Potter and Pokémon Gold and Silver when they come out in the UK. |
| Ongoing site maintenance takes up an increasing amount of time and energy - highest visit level logged on the counter last month was a staggering 8000+ in a single day (so you can imagine what the mail traffic is like!) and realistically it looks as though we will need to focus on building the new resources whilst sufficient time remains to do so. Assuming it's possible to complete these areas during 2001, it's likely that the years from 2002 onwards will be fully taken up simply with maintaining the Project HappyChild website as it then stands. Please bear with us while these new areas are completed!
Our thanks to everyone for all the support received, particularly to the many people who keep us updated when links change, so that the site can remain fully live and active. None of this would be possible without all the help that comes in from all over the world. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and rewarding New Year, Penny. ****************************************************************** |
