Project HappyChild NEWS

Appeals and Projects helping kids across the world

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

Hi everyone! Another landmark month here - just over 150,000 visits! - a 20% increase over last month's highest-ever access level - and the million visit threshold is just around the corner at time of writing (972,000). We should be there about 9th November, all going well .....

It's been an action-packed few weeks, as usual - and our thanks to a leading perfume house for their kind offer to charities in the Project HappyChild Directory of gifts for Xmas fund-raising, and to Stephen Hendry at Essex County Council for the offer of a substantial amount of surplus office furniture and computer equipment, to organizations helping children, and schools (see Surplus Resources).

[Note - 4th April 2001 - this ongoing resource has now been withdrawn as all the surplus IT equipment etc. has now been allocated.]

ACCELERATED LEARNING - Michael Tipper's November articles are *already* on line - the book reviewed this month is by an Israeli author who specialises in natural treatments for learning and attention difficulties and the Memory Training article is about biofeedback and ADHD.

Incidentally if you missed last month's articles, the book Michael reviewed in October sold 7.5 *million* copies in China in 25 weeks .....

Also on the subject of children and learning - there has been a significant addition to the Syndromes Links Index this month, a link to a free e-mail advice service by Educational Psychologists, together with free-to-print strategies (pre-prepared interventions) for use by teachers and parents dealing with special educational needs.

APPEALS FOR HELP - We've received an urgent appeal for help with funds from a project in Romania building a new home for 24 teenagers shortly to be made homeless - see Betesda Piatra Neamt on the Appeals & Projects Romania page. Any help anyone can offer will be much appreciated.

Azah in Malaysia is desperately trying to raise funds towards her son Azrul's operations to correct multiple congenital deformities - see the Guestbook .

Tom Trewick's family and friends are auctioning various items on line to raise funds for his operation - including a 1982 cup final cover signed by Glenn Hoddle and a number of original paintings - see Tom's site for more details. Sponsorship is also sought for a four-man team planning to cycle from Newport, Wales to Wembley - see Sponsored Events - to raise funds for Tom. BOC will match any sponsorship raised so every extra pound of sponsorship makes a real difference.

EVENTS - There's a celebrity shopping evening at Hamleys in Regent Street, London, on Wednesday 15th November. Leslie Ash is amongst the celebrities due to be present, along with medieval stilt walkers, jugglers, the Pied Piper of Hamleys, mulled wine, mince pies and 10% off all purchases on the night. Tickets are *very* reasonably priced - in aid of BLISS * The National Charity for the Newborn (pre-booking essential). OK! Magazine is covering this family event.

On a more sombre note, a one day "Anti-Bullying Conference" has been organised by Family Service Units (FSU) to be held in central London on 13th December 2000 - keynote speaker Rt.Hon. David Blunkett MP, Secretary of State for Education. Details on the General Events page (pre-booking essential).

We've received a request from UNESCO to publicise their "Time" Project , for which only 157 schools, youth groups and organizations have signed up so far. - quote -"Time" offers young people the opportunity to communicate live with each other and learn about other cultures. By comparing our local communities, we are all taking part in the global village. - unquote. You'll find more details about this project on the Latest News page (entry of 16th October).

VINNY LAUWERS - our thanks to Eileen at Areeba for info that Vinny has some new updates on his website (people who have recently signed up for the Newsletter may not know that Vinny, a paraplegic, recently completed an amazing solo world voyage to raise funds for disabled and disadvantaged children). Vinny has made the shortlist for the World Sailor awards and his major sponsor has placed a huge billboard of Vision Quest (his boat) and Vinny over the Tullamarine Freeeway - the main freeway from Melbourne Airport to the City.

Vinny and Jacquie have been visiting organizations that help kids in need and Vinny speaks movingly about Leukodystrophy in his diary entry of 13th October.

SCHOOLS INTERCHANGE - Our thanks to Dave Thomson, Inspector ICT, for forwarding details of the Worcestershire Grid for Learning which now has comprehensive links to schools' websites on line across Worcestershire. Details on the England counties N-Z page.

Another country-school-net has been added to Schools Interchange - over 2000 schools and universities in Thailand - and we're also delighted to say that the page for Schools Italy has now been updated with a link to the new listings after the reform of the Italian school system. The "route" through the Italian sites is a little complex but we've detailed each stage as clearly as possible.

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

KIDS-INTEREST RESOURCES: In the background to everything else that's been going on here, there have been major additions recently to the children's interest areas of the site - Pokémon and Harry Potter. Andy's Guide to Pokémon now has pictures of all the different Pokémon characters, with a mass of inter-related info that kids need to find their way through the red, blue and yellow games. The Magical World of Harry Potter has at last been opened up to visitors - the first 100 or so pages have now been constructed - see the books index - and specific info should be added fairly soon. In the meantime there are links to photos of the children who'll be taking the parts of Harry, Ron and Hermione in the film, along with details of Jo Rowling's extraordinary offer to write an extra couple of books in aid of Comic Relief .....

Both Pokémon and Harry Potter are wonderful entertainment for kids (and many adults!) - but both of them are so complex and have so many inter-related facets that often children simply can't remember all the different factors and end up feeling slightly swamped. We hope that the info going up in both these areas will be useful for kids to back-track on, especially now there will soon be Pokémon gold and silver, Harry Potter 5 and of course the two new books as well .....

SITE ADMIN - The increasing visit level has made it necessary to - finally! - take the step of centralising graphics this month, for download purposes (and swifter pageloading overall). A task made significantly more complex by the fact that many of the graphics files weren't even on the computer (we had lost 3000+ files in 20 minutes to the love-bug virus in May and not all of them had been located for restoration, albeit still mercifully present on the site server in Sheffield). The whole site (1600 pages) has now been re-set with the new graphic links, and seems to be working well. The previous graphics will stay in place for the foreseeable future (to allow for the fact that many search engines have older, cached versions of numerous pages) so we'd appreciate a swift e-mail if any graphics fail to appear on the new pages, so that we can restore these. It looks like five or six may be missing overall but on such a huge site, locating them may take a little while otherwise!

TRANSLATIONS (25 languages including Welsh) - we have added an InterTran translation bar to the main welcome page [http://www.happychild.org.uk] - we have permission to link to their free translation facilities but have not had any response to our query as to why a request for money appears periodically instead of the translated page requested, or any clarification as to what volume of pages is translate-able free per day (this is why this facility is only on the main welcome page, for now).

Having free translation facilities for so many languages would make a great difference to the numbers of children who can access the Project HappyChild site, but our ongoing facilities with Systran and FreeTranslation.com are entirely free and we need a definitive answer as to the applicable charges for InterTran (to people using their service) before deciding whether it is entirely appropriate to make the links site-wide.

And finally - 9th November (see top of page) is a significant date (911) for many people, as it was then that the Berlin Wall fell, back in 1989, making possible much greater integration across Europe. If you bookmark any of the Project HappyChild website pages using IE5 you should get a 911 icon come up - it's not just the international "help" number but also a reminder that even peaceful action by large groups of people *does* make a difference. We aren't by any means "activists" here but the website is increasingly providing a 911 interchange worldwide, making it possible for both help and resources offered for kids, and the specific needs of untold numbers of children in different countries, to be matched in many ways.

Our thanks to everyone who has linked to this site - links of which we've been advised recently include BREAK charity, The Guardian on line (revision advice), The Children's Society, Ask Jeeves, Library staff at North Devon College, 5th York Brownies UK, Volunteer Africa, Jazzles, Hertfordshire grid for learning, and the National Playing Fields Association - an ongoing link to NPFA and its comprehensive database of fields currently at risk will be added to the FOCUS area at Project HappyChild in the next week or two.
