Project HappyChild NEWS 1st October 2000 [for ongoing updates, see Latest Site News] |
| Hi everyone! Don't quite know where the last four weeks have gone, seem to have whizzed by in a flash - this month we've had over 120,000 visits and the volume of items coming in for the site has been astonishing. Thanks for all the feedback! - much appreciated. Also our thanks to the Daily Mail (UK) for including us in their Web Directory of the best 350+ sites on the Internet (9/9/00). |
| This month we've finally built the rest of the "Creativity" area - last
scheduled additions for the overall site base - with the addition of
"Articles", "Poems" and "Jokes". In the articles area we've started
off with two thought-provoking items - "In Praise of Black Sheep", by
a USA author, and "The Cause of Cot Death ... and how to prevent it",
from New Zealand. The first poem has also been added, "Unity", about
the partnership between home and school.
And the first Jokes are now on line ..... typical kids' humour, and more coming in all the time. We had a few doubts about including the last one ... you'll see why! - but it sets the level of what's just-about-acceptable for the page. You'll also find the *real* reason why that chicken crossed the road ..... Also in the Creativity area we've added two more items in the "Artwork" section - our thanks to Steve Feld at John F. Kennedy High School, in the Bronx, for forwarding details of "Why is the Mona Lisa smiling" [now housed in the Getty Museum and the Vatican, amongst others] and "ArtiFaq2100", an intriguing and challenging exhibit. |
| More items have been added to the Guestbook this month - an appeal by the friends and family of a British boy, Tom Trewick, urgently requiring funds for treatment of a rare, recurring brain tumour; and a letter from First Step International Foundation, in Gambia, requesting teaching aids and funds to help in their work with children in Gambia. |
| A lot of the work going on here over the last four weeks won't have
been particularly "visible" - a major progression has been the addition
of a seventh language, Norwegian, to the translation bar on all main
pages. Our thanks to FreeTranslation.com for allowing us increasing
use of their facilities [see our Sponsors page]. We've also been able
to update the foreign language page versions of the Index to Free
Educational Resources worldwide, and for the on-site UFO story,
"Glaxibel The Avenger", written a couple of years ago by James, who
does all our technical support.
We've had a few minor ongoing "access" problems where our ISP Force 9 / Plus Net hasn't been available - webstats haven't materialised since 3rd September so the webstats page hasn't been updated since then. If you're on the mailing list you'll have received the update on the "erap estrada" virus alert early this month [see Latest News, 2nd September] - thanks to everyone who carried out the safety procedures and passed on the message; this particular virus seems to have had far less impact than the "Love Bug" virus which preceded it. |
| Events - calendars for Sponsored Events and General Events have now
been updated, and the National Eczema Society has a "Sponsored
Wrap" scheduled for 20th October 2000. Individuals, businesses,
schools and families can join in and raise money by wearing a Tubifast
bandage (supplied by NES) all day or by wrapping up in other ways.
School classes can wear bandages, wrap up the teacher, have a
three-legged wrap race ... lots of fun and helps kids with a really
distressing condition at the same time. There's still time to request a
"Wrap Pack" from NES - click here .
The London Triathlon is taking place today (see Sponsored Events) so our good wishes to all taking part, especially those raising funds for disadvantaged kids. Also on the "Events" front, our thanks to Laurent Dubois at EduNet Switzerland for sending in details of the "Polar Challenge" scheduled to take place shortly. Five adventurers plan to climb a granite wall 900m high, in the Antarctic - collaboration is planned with many schools across the world, with scientists, the explorers themselves and the media, in a huge "Virtual Learning" project. For more details see our "FOCUS" page. |
| We'd like to thank John Higgins for the offer this month of a free PC
and printer (see Surplus Resources) to a good cause, school or charity
in the Coventry area - with free delivery over a 50-mile radius.
Michael Tipper's October articles for the Accelerated Learning area of the site have just arrived; we hope to have these on line in the next couple of days. This remains a hugely popular area of the site and our thanks go to Michael for continuing to write for us in the midst of an increasingly-heavy workload. We have just - last day of September - added a link to the "KIDS AIDS" website, from the main welcome page at Project HappyChild [scroll down one screen] where you can visit each day to donate FREE time towards the prevention and treatment of childhood AIDS. 1800 children are infected with HIV each day and the Kids Aids site can make a real difference to the amount of care available. The care is paid for by daily sponsors, same principle as the Hunger Site (free food) and the Rainforest site (each donation saving a few square feet of the rainforest, each day) - if you bookmark our welcome page there are links to donate daily to all three sites, from there. Take a look at the "donation totals" on each of the sites, to see the radical difference your daily visit can make. |
| And finally - because of the increasing traffic across this website, the
volume of correspondence and resulting pagebuilding required across all site areas, we've
reached the rational decision that it isn't entirely practicable to try
and build any more free educational resources within Project
HappyChild's available time, despite the fact that these resources
bring in major traffic for the website as a whole.
Consequently the free-to-print French worksheets will be built separately by Freeway, in much the same way as "Andy's Guide to Pokémon" and "The Magical World of Harry Potter" are separate from Project HappyChild but will in due course provide a significant proportion of the free resources available through the website. Ten per cent of any advertising revenue from all three of these sites will accrue to Project HappyChild to safeguard the long-term future of this site which at present is dependent almost entirely on the income from paid advertising in the "shop" area. Additionally all three sites publicise Project HappyChild so the separate search engine listings will be beneficial for the website as a whole. These sites will be "mirrored" on Project HappyChild so as not to lose the already-substantial search engine listings currently built up, but due to increasing bandwidth usage on the main site, the links outwards for these three areas have been modified to divert new traffic outside the main Project HappyChild bandwidth area. For a more complete overview of how everything fits together, please refer to the "site history" page. |
| So ..... the Project HappyChild website itself is finally built, after
these many long months! ... and thanks go to the many people who have
become involved along the way. New items for any of the established areas
are always welcomed, as is any help by forwarding or printing out the publicity flyer for the site - all of a sudden the first million visits isn't looking too far away and that's only become possible because so very many people have linked to Project HappyChild and passed details on to friends. Thank you!
Penny. ****************************************************************** |
