Project HappyChild NEWS 1st June 2000 [for ongoing updates, see Latest Site News] |
| Welcome to the June 2000 issue of Project HappyChild News. Today is a
personal landmark as 1st June 2000 marks two years since I took over the
building of this website [you'll find the background to this wholly
unexpected development on the new "site history" page .....].
To be truthful I've always been a little uncertain about having any personal details on the site at all, but Michael Tipper (who writes the Accelerated Learning pages) has finally persuaded me it would be appropriate to explain how this all came about. Michael is on his annual "two month break" now, to allow him time for the preparations for the World Memory Championships which he's organising again this year. Michael telephoned me yesterday to let me know the first "spontaneous publicity" had, coincidentally, come about, with a brief mention of the website in "The Guardian" (education section) on 30th May. Our thanks to Jerome Monahan at The Guardian!! |
| 1st June also marks the scheduled launch of "BT Surftime" which for a
minimal payment each month allows unlimited Internet access with no call
charges. This is a radical step forward and means that usage here in the UK
is likely to snowball over the next few months.
Accordingly we've had to do some restructuring here, to prepare for the likely increase in traffic - wholesale re-ordering of the Schools Interchange and Worldwide Appeals areas, to minimise graphic downloads and overall bandwidth usage. Please, if you have any bookmarks within Schools and Appeals, or any links to these pages, could you check they're still accurate by going to the relevant continent index (eg Schools Africa) and checking the page address for the relevant country. We will be removing the original pages (almost 600 of them) over the next few days ..... |
| The other *major* change on the site concerns the Newsletter itself. As per the reminder e-mails sent out recently, the old mailing list cannot be used and it's necessary for everyone other than Charities included in the Directory to re-subscribe through "ListBot" to receive a copy by e-mail each month [NB Listbot free service withdrawn from all customers by Microsoft, summer 2001 - Penny, 8/7/01]. Of the 850 main pages on the site [not including the free-to-print maths worksheets and reading system], we've added a ListBot joining facility to the foot of around 750 of them so far - with around 100 pages still to upgrade [whenever time allows]. Our thanks to everyone who's re-subscribed - and to all our new subscribers - receiving the notifications of who's subscribed each day is very heartening. |
| EVENTS Solo skipper Vinny Lauwers (who hails from Port of Williamstown, Australia) has made steady progress and is now making advance preparations for crossing a notoriously dangerous part of the ocean, the Agulhas Bank, south of Africa, renowned for its bad weather and strong currents opposing one another. For further details, please see the Latest News page summaries and FOCUS. General Events and Sponsored Events: both calendars have recently been updated and more events are being added regularly. Tickets are now available for the prestigious "City Dinner" arranged by Children in Crisis for Tuesday 11th July 2000; also a date has been fixed for the celebrity football match, "Battle of the Soaps", now scheduled for 10th September at Villa Park. Details of both of these are on the General Events page. The Millennium Balloon launch from Quesnel, B.C., Canada, has again been re-scheduled due to weather and jetstream problems - now due to be launched on 3rd June 2000, see FOCUS for link to their update page. |
| GUESTBOOK We've received a delightful e-mail from Fabian Peralta in Quito, Ecuador, who aims to convert a large property he owns into a Children's Home, to house 30-40 children currently living on the streets - he would welcome contact from anyone with advice or experience to offer. Also in the Guestbook is an appeal for help with education costs for a Russian orphan girl called Dasha. |
| CHARITIES in the PROJECT HAPPYCHILD DIRECTORY Entries have been updated as follows: Fairbridge (postal address and text entry), POD (e-mail address), BLISS - The National Charity for the Newborn (change of name and new website link), and Children's Country Holidays Fund (direct e-mail address added). You may wish to update cached or printed-out versions of the Directory. |
| SCHOOLS INTERCHANGE Aside from the overall structural changes mentioned above, the link from the Schools China page to the Regent Schools project has been amended [our thanks to Phil and Jan in Macau, and to Jiang at Regent in this respect], also the Canada SchoolNet / Grassroots site has been designed meaning that links have been modified for all Canada areas within Schools Interchange. Schools listings for a further province, Nunavut, have also been added. |
| SYNDROMES A new addition has been made to the Syndromes Links Index, with a link to a comprehensive and well-structured article written by a parent who has worked steadily through all the options to find ways of liberating a child from the restrictions of ADHD [Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity Disorder]. Items covered within the article include allergies, ADHD and food sensitivity, the Feingold Diet, the Failsafe Diet [which originates in Australia], Asthma, Yeast, Hyperactivity, Ritalin, and Diet Control. Well worth a read by any parent faced with apparent "behavioural problems" - and includes web-links to organizations mentioned in the article, also a book list for further related reading. |
| FREE RESOURCES This website is for - and about - children. Without any doubt, the single subject which today holds more children's interest than any other is Pokémon - so after a lot of deliberation, we've begun construction on a new area about this absorbing subject, with information for children to print off free of charge. The "red and blue" games versions currently used in the UK demand that children think laterally on a great many levels. The 150 Pokémon which appear in the Gameboy game have different types, different elements, evolve from one form to another at specific levels, do well against some Pokémon but not others, have different techniques they can use ..... etc., the list is endless. It's hardly surprising the game is so popular because it challenges children's minds in a way vastly beyond anything previously available. For the benefit of the many children who are having trouble completing the game, there's a detailed "walk through" now on line, and a growing reservoir of background information (Types, Elements, Evolution) as well as detailed information sheets on the individual Pokémon characters within the Pokédex [20 of these so far on line, the rest will be completed shortly]. Other information (on H.M.s, T.M.s, landmarks, towns, gyms, hard-to-find Pokémon, etc.) will be added as soon as the pagebuilding schedule allows, with all the different factors progressively linked together. The UK Pokémon championships are scheduled to begin soon (apparently now in a "roadshow" format) - with so many children now becoming actively involved, the resources on site here are designed to make it as easy as possible for children to complete their red and blue games - as well perhaps as enlightening parents a little about the structure and intricacies of this wholly new concept to which all our children seem to be so thoroughly attached. |
| PROJECT HAPPYCHILD SHOP As you're probably aware, the SHOP area largely focusses on items of benefit to children. This month parts of the shop have been re-designed, and we're delighted that all three of our advertisers are staying with us for the next few months - Pathways Design Group [Nintendo interfaces and switches, allowing disabled children to use Nintendo consoles], Innovative Products [Go Karts for disabled children] and Humanitarian Aid Transport Services, arranging the transportation of required commodities to any part of the world. The navigation table on all main pages is being (subtly) upgraded to give more awareness of our advertisers whose funds make it possible for this website to continue. Your support for their products / services would be appreciated! |
| And finally ..... I trust this month's "Love Letter" virus didn't hit your
computer as it did ours! Our thanks to James Banks who so swiftly sorted
out the problems here - we lost 3000 graphics files (overwritten in only 20
minutes) but for the most part we are being able to replace these, and
things are gradually going back to normal.
Thanks are due also to Milan Zolotny, from Prague (Czech Republic), for submitting Project HappyChild for the "Christmas Rose" award subsequently given to this website by Laki, who does voluntary work in a "Children's Village" in Yugoslavia with children of many nations who have lost their parents in war. The ongoing level of support for Project HappyChild from individuals and organizations across the world is much appreciated. Penny. ****************************************************************** |
