Project HappyChild NEWS 1st May 2000 [for ongoing updates, see Latest Site News] |
| Welcome to the May 2000 issue of Project HappyChild News. |
| EVENTS Solo skipper Vinny Lauwers has now passed the half-way point on his epic world voyage - this month's updates have included "Dolphin Watching" and "Living with my disability" - see FOCUS. A wide range of General Events have been added this month including a London Hat Show, a Celebrity Pigeon Shoot and a Dracula Spectacular - see the Events Calendar 2000 for The Children's Trust who have now raised an amazing Ł4 million for their "Hand of Hope" Appeal. See also the Sponsored Events page, which includes many other events including the most recent addition, Trek Nepal 2001, offered by Children in Crisis. The Millennium Balloon launch from Quesnel, B.C., Canada, has again been re-scheduled due to weather and jetstream problems - now due to be launched on 6th May 2000, see FOCUS for ongoing updates. |
| GUESTBOOK We've recently added to the on-line Guestbook a letter received from Kristine Pawloski, a 27-year-old certified American Deaf Education teacher in Chicago, searching for a Deaf Education teaching position in England. She'd welcome any help anyone can offer, including information on obtaining a working visa etc. |
| Other news re CHARITIES in the PROJECT HAPPYCHILD DIRECTORY The National Association for Toy & Leisure Libraries' range of publications has been added to the Charity Booklists page in the Project HappyChild Shop - including a directory of companies producing or selling toys and play equipment suitable for children or adults with special needs, specific toys for new toy libraries to consider in their purchasing decisions, and an insight into how switches can give adults and children control over their play and learning - also the Good Toy Guide & Awards [toys tested in NATLL Toy Libraries]. Details added also to the Syndromes Links index page. Ockenden International are asking UK schools to organise handprint collections for their "Million Hands of Hope" appeal raising funds for schooling for refugee children in Pakistan and several other projects worldwide; schools, companies and individuals can also help by collecting foreign coins left over from holidays abroad - please see Resources Required. |
| SCHOOLS INTERCHANGE It was with some regret that we learned from Mark Ivory that BushNet (the on-line school net for schools in the Australian outback) has ceased operation. It was a link from Mark's Japanese page at the school (on BushNet) where he formerly taught which led us to Japan Window's huge resources for schools and universities on line across the whole of Japan. The Japan page at Schools Interchange plus the Schools Australia page have been updated accordingly. Schools Interchange pages have been radically streamlined this month, for easier access and swifter download time. The long England A-M, England N-Z, Scotland and Wales pages have had all the background info on the complex structure of local authorities removed to a separate (linked) page, and the individual country pages within Africa, the Americas, Australasia and Eurasia [Europe/Asia] have been similarly streamlined and linked to a separate page giving details about the unique construction of Schools Interchange and information about adding links to local school nets in visitors' own areas. |
| EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES Web-based random maths problems have been added to index pages for Maths Key Stages One, Two, Three and GCSE. Our thanks to Randall Rose of Fairbanks Country Day Preschool through High School, San Diego, California, who sent in details of this resource. The index to Free Educational Resources worldwide has now been auto-translated into several languages - French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and also Norwegian (new!) - because of the difficulty experienced by visitors in translating extremely long pages using the existing on-line linked free translation facilities. The other "very long" page is our UFO Story linked with Roswell, "Glaxibel The Avenger", which has also been auto-translated into these languages, for easy access by all visitors. Any help from foreign nationals in tidying up the odd words which haven't translated fully in this story, would be much appreciated! The first vocabulary section in our free-to-print French resources for practice and revision has now been completed (index plus 7 worksheets). This new area of the website (likely to span several hundred additional pages) is scheduled for completion by Summer 2000. |
| WORLDWIDE APPEALS & PROJECTS Nearly 8 million people are on the brink of a humanitarian and ecological disaster in drought stricken Ethiopia. Three years without rain have caused crops to fail and cattle to die, leaving farmers and their families with little left to eat. The Hunger Site [where you can donate food *free* on line each day] is working with the World Food Programme to provide food each day for up to 45,000 desperately hungry Ethiopian school children to concentrate on their lessons and stay in school - see Appeals & Projects Ethiopia. In the aftermath of severe floods in Venezuela and Mozambique school feeding projects are also helping many children continue their studies, so they don't lose a whole year of school as well as their homes and stability - see Appeals Venezuela and Appeals Mozambique for more details. You can help actively simply by visiting the Hunger Site website [as do several hundred thousand people across the world each day] - one "click" on the "Donate Food" button can donate anywhere between one and four cups of food, depending on the number of commercial sponsors for that day. You can also donate an additional five cups of food by signing up for the free Hunger Site newsletter [click on "triple your donation" at their site]. Mercy-USA for Aid and Development, a non-profit international relief and
development organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering and
supporting individuals and their communities in their efforts to become more
self-sufficient, has been added to our Worldwide Appeals & Projects pages
for Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, Turkey, and Somalia (Africa). |
| ACCELERATED LEARNING We're delighted to say that Michael Tipper's May articles on Accelerated Learning are already on line. The Book Review is of "The Learner's Pocketbook", the Amazing Brain fact is about Cab Drivers' Brains, this month's Great Mind is Chris Moon, the Memory Training article is all about The 6 Step Master Plan for Accelerated Learning, and the Mnemonic is about remembering the elements up to Argon in the Periodic Table. All pagebuilding on the Project HappyChild site is - amazingly - completely up to date now [apart from the ongoing new area for French worksheets, which is a long term project]. Also on line in the Accelerated Learning area is a press release for the World Memory Championships in August 2000 [and a link to last year's results also]. There's a bio on line for Michael Tipper in this area, and when the main site re-direct page was re-designed this month [to allow new visitors accessing via expired pagelinks, to more easily find the different areas of the site], a link was added from Penny's photo to a brief bio with some background information, to provide an easy reference point for the increasing numbers of enquiries as to how and why Project HappyChild came into being. |
| And finally ..... our ISP still doesn't appear to have entirely recovered from
the "packet bombing" in April - we haven't had accurate webstats at all this
month and our apologies to everyone who's had trouble accessing the site
due to intermittent very-slow-loading of pages, which is entirely outside our
control. We trust Force 9 will resolve all their problems shortly.
In the meantime, May is heavily scheduled for progressing the pages for our new French area - if anyone has updates or additions for any other areas of the website, please allow a slightly longer lead time than usual for building and uploading. Penny. ****************************************************************** |
