Appeals and Projects helping children across the world

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

Welcome to the March 2000 issue of Project HappyChild News. February has been a tremendously busy month, with over 70,000 visits to the website, representing a 40% increase on the 50,000 received during January 2000.

ACCELERATED LEARNING

Our congratulations first of all to Michael Tipper, whose pages on Memory Improvement and Learning Information have been awarded the "Grandmaster Link Award". Michael has put many hours of work over the last two years into providing this vast resource to enable children and schools across the world to have free access to techniques for accelerated learning.

Michael's March articles will be on line in a day or two, along with his guide to using Mind Manager to build mind-map-style websites.

The World Memory Championships - which Michael organises - were featured in some respect (we don't have details) on ABC Prime Time TV in Minneapolis a couple of weeks ago - resulting in a huge surge of visitors to Project HappyChild, 5313 in a single day, and probably having considerable bearing on the significant rise in visitors across the whole site during February.

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

PROJECT HAPPYCHILD DIRECTORY & WORLDWIDE APPEALS & PROJECTS

The Project HappyChild Directory of organizations helping children has undergone considerable changes this month, with a number of organizations updating their text entries and a large proportion of telephone / fax numbers changing due to the national changes in codes scheduled for 22nd April. If you have a printed-out or cached version of the Directory, you may wish to update the version you hold.

Ongoing changes to the Directory are noted on the Latest News page, which is designed to allow regular visitors easy access to the latest developments and new additions on site.

Meanwhile there have been a number of changes to the pages in Worldwide Appeals and Projects [please refer to Latest News (February) for specific details] and these have been uploaded in conjunction with a major upgrade of Appeals pages as for other areas of the website [see below].

SITE CONSTRUCTION

Significant changes have taken place across the site as a whole this month, to allow easier navigation from one area to another and also to enable new visitors (who can come in on any of the 1150+ pages from the search engines, as well as via the growing number of links to Project HappyChild) to clearly see what resources are available.

A new site navigation table has been designed, with all the major areas clearly detailed in an easier-to-use format, and replaces the previous large table on all main pages across the site. Additionally we have - finally! - upgraded the translation pages, for the use of overseas visitors, and also added an "English" translation link from all main pages, to offset the many e-mails being received for help with translations. All translation pages also offer the navigation table (auto-translated into the individual languages) which again increases the visibility of all organizations and resources featured on the site.

Incidentally, at this point, I would like to extend my thanks to the renowned scientist Paul Lutus, whose extraordinary program "Arachnophilia" (free in exchange for not complaining about your life!) has transformed the way this site is maintained. This program allows block changes to many pages of html at once (up to about 200, in my experience) and means that major changes can be made across the site without the need for "frames" which so limit active page size. This program achieves in minutes what used to take days, and is the only means by which such major changes in overall structure have been able to be made in such a short space of time.

If anyone would like details of how to download a "careware" copy of Arachnophilia, please see the link here.
[Editor's note, December 2022: this is the download link for Legacy Arachnophilia 4.0 (full version), still used here to the present day.]

FREE RESOURCES ON SITE

The free-to-print worksheets for children learning times tables have had several thousand accesses this month, along with the ever-popular addition worksheets, the "build your own website" guide and the Index to free educational resources on the Internet. This month we have started work on another area, free worksheets for learning and practising French, scheduled to run out at some 400 pages which we hope to have fully on line by some time this summer.

GENERAL EVENTS AND SPONSORED EVENTS

Events added to the General Events page for 2000 include a Casino Night, City Dinner, Property Lunch (at the Savoy), a Campaign Event at the Royal Festival Hall with Dame Shirley Bassey, and a Gala Dinner at the London Hilton.

Sponsored Events - added to the huge range already offered for this year - include "To Russia with Love", the London Triathlon, cycling from Mount Sinai to Jerusalem and "Along The Nile".

SCHOOLS INTERCHANGE

We'd like to extend our thanks to Suresh Lala, in India, for some very constructive input for the India page at Schools Interchange - the first detailed information we have been able to obtain on schools' websites in this country. Help from other overseas visitors in providing information for other yet-to-be-completed areas at Schools Interchange would be much appreciated.

The listing for Northamptonshire schools has been amended - in which respect our thanks to Brenda Scoble - any help from local authorities in updating details here of schools on line is always valued.

Schools Interchange as a whole has been upgraded this month - not only the translation links and the new navigation table, but also re-design of the page headers to allow graphic links to the main page at Project HappyChild, the main index to Schools Interchange, the index to Worldwide Appeals & Projects and the Index to free Educational Resources, so that new and existing visitors have direct shortcuts to areas of the site likely to be of interest.

RESOURCES - SURPLUS AND REQUIRED

A request from Children in Crisis for office chairs and meeting room chairs has been added to our Resources Required page, and we have now - in view of the many e-mail requests for information about second-hand computers - added a link from both the Surplus Resources and Resources Required pages to an international directory of organizations which facilitates donations of used computer hardware for schools and community groups.

OTHER NEWS

The Millennium Balloon launch is now re-scheduled to 4th March - fingers crossed! - which is also two years to the day since we first received the domain name for this website. Looking back, it seems astonishing that things have progressed so far in such a short time.

The Latest News page gives details of any updates we receive on the Balloon launch, progress on Vinny Lauwers' epic solo world voyage, Guestbook entries, new events being added, schools updates and additions ... and much more. Please "bookmark" the Latest News page, if you can, as it's the only means we have of updating visitors on what's happening, in between Newsletters.

The Millennium Challenge has now been extended to 1st January 2001 to take in the whole of this Millennium year - and also keeping peace with those who maintain the next millennium doesn't start until that date!

Pagebuilding is - almost! - completely up to date now, which means that advised additions and amendments can usually be on line within a week, often less. A long lead period is particularly appreciated on General Events, but we do our utmost to include all information that is sent in for the site, as soon as possible after receipt.

My thanks to everyone who's been in touch this month, your help is much appreciated.
