Project HappyChild NEWS 1st January 2000 [for ongoing updates, see Latest Site News] |
| This is a new phase for Project HappyChild also. With overall site
construction now completed, our Appeals & Projects area extends over 180
countries worldwide and we are beginning to receive a steady flow of
information from many parts of the world, the latest inclusion being one
from the 709th Military Police battalion helping children in a school in
Kosovo. Please take a look in case you might be able to help. You'll also find
details of Mercy Corps International, offering emergency relief services to
assist people afflicted by conflict or disaster, and working in a number of
countries worldwide - they're also listed on our Crisis Appeals page.
Similarly the Schools Interchange area of the site is becoming ever more comprehensive, and our thanks go to John M.M. Cable of Wah Loon College, Hong Kong, for access to the Government listing of schools' websites in Hong Kong and to Chris Nicole at Kingston-upon-Hull City Council for updated info re their schools' websites - also we've received an e-mail from Kabby Githaiga at a school in Kenya offering to host European and British students and teachers - you'll find more details in the Guestbook. On the morning of 30th December we've received an e-mail from Davin Arul, Vice-President, I.STAR Sdn Bhd in Malaysia, giving us the government URL for schools' websites in Malaysia, for which we'll be adding a page shortly. |
| On the FOCUS page we've added details of the extraordinary voyage by
Vinny Lauwers, a 32-year-old paraplegic who is sailing solo around the world
from Australia to raise funds for disabled and disadvantaged children. By
using the map shown you can access the Parasail Vision Quest website for
updates on Vinny's diary and current position.
Also in FOCUS this month is the Millennium Balloon Experiment due to take place on 1st January 2000 in Quesnel, BC, Canada - children are being asked to "listen in" to hear the radio hams talking to one another, and to track the balloon. Postscript (29/1/2000) - Millennium Balloon launch delayed through bad weather, re-scheduled for February 2000, see their site for further details. |
| The Sponsored Events area of the site has now been updated to include the
quite exceptional range of events all across the world being offered by
Ockenden International to support their work helping refugees, and many
other events also, including those recently advised by BIBIC - the British
Institute for Brain Injured Children.
The General Events area of the site, having been cleared of 1999 events, now simply includes Vinny Lauwers' voyage and the Millennium Balloon - schools, charities and companies can post up details FREE on this page to advertise events raising funds for disadvantaged children. It would be appreciated if items to be added could be sent as soon as possible, to give time for effective publicity before the date of your event. |
| Michael Tipper's visit to the school in Chennai, India (this school originally made an Appeal through our Guestbook page) forms the subject of his main article this month. Although Mike's area is specifically about Accelerated Learning, the Chennai visit is just one example of the interlinks now coming about through Project HappyChild, and it was felt appropriate to include it at this special time which marks a milestone not only for us but for the world as a whole. |
| We'd like to thank everyone who has linked to Project HappyChild recently - links of which we've recently become aware include the Australian Broadcasting Authority, InetMedia (Sweden), North Devon College / Plymouth University (UK), Northwest House, Chicago (USA), the Unitec Institute of Technology (New Zealand), Faith on the Net, and The Royal Society for Deaf Children. Project HappyChild is also now mentioned on the Manchester Bulletin Board for Schools (UK), appears on Yahoo! in Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and Asia, and has found its way onto WebKatalog and also The Brit Index which describes us as "a unique site". Our thanks to all concerned as these links have led to a tangible increase in overall traffic. |
| Wishing you a joyful start to the year 2000, Best regards, Penny. ****************************************************************** |
