Project HappyChild NEWS - Issue 12 1st August 1999 |
Welcome to Issue 12 of Project HappyChild News.
LINKS
Our thanks to Roger Lloyd at Samaritan's Purse for the recent link to Project HappyChild (and
for the graphic he produced for this [from our welcome page], which finally gives us a logo we can
issue in response to the many requests!) and to Shoalhaven in Australia who have added us to their
Teachers' Links page.
The logo is reproduced here for anyone who wishes to
use it with a link:![]()
PUBLICITY
Last weekend we received a mention in the Times Newspaper (London) with reference to Mike
Tipper's page about the World Memory Championships -
http://www.happychild.org.uk/acc/tpr/wmc/memchamp.htm . Also we would like to thank Corel
Corporation in Canada whose profile of the Project HappyChild website went on line on their site
at around the same time.
FOCUS
The first items are - at last! - up in this section. We've set the ball rolling with a page on
MERU, an unusual charity which makes custom-made equipment (such as seats for air travel) for
disabled children.
Also on line are details about the preparations for this year's Operation Christmas Child, organised by Samaritan's Purse. You'll find details about OCC and MERU in the FOCUS index at http://www.happychild.org.uk/nvs/focus/index.htm .
SCHOOLS - ROMANIA
We were delighted to receive an e-mail from AdiM, System Administrator at BPHasdeu School,
Buzau, Romania, who sent the URL for RoEduNet, the Romanian local government authority for
connecting schools in a national computer network and to the Internet. Locating local school-nets
in countries where we don't speak the language is exceptionally difficult and help of this nature
from our overseas visitors is greatly valued. You'll find access details for RoEduNet by clicking on
Romania in the Schools Eurasia (Europe/Asia) index at
http://www.happychild.org.uk/schools/eurasia/index.htm .
PROJECT HAPPYCHILD DIRECTORY
Last month's Newsletter about all the site re-structuring was pretty long and involved - sorry! -
but we needed to explain what was being done as it was such a major change. The Directory
(which now starts at http://www.happychild.org.uk/dir/page0001.htm ) is now fully interlinked
(with bookmarks!) both from the Directory Index ( http://www.happychild.org.uk/dir/index.htm )
and right across the site (eg to Booklists, Catalogues, and from Appeals areas, etc.) to make it as
simple as possible for visitors to navigate. Our thanks for the very positive feedback received on
this.
WORLDWIDE APPEALS AND PROJECTS
Completing the Directory interlinking has enabled us to go ahead with building (and upgrading)
pages for over 170 Appeals areas worldwide. We've identified charities from the Project
HappyChild Directory working in a huge range of countries - in some countries there are only one
or two, whilst in others (like Pakistan - see the Eurasia Index at
http://www.happychild.org.uk/nvs/appeals/eurasia/index.htm ) there may be as many as five
identified so far.
We'll be adding details of other organizations working internationally, later in the year, whenever time allows us to progress this. In the meantime those organizations already listed give access to the majority of countries right across the world.
SITE UPGRADES
We're delighted to advise that the page upgrades for the balance of the site are now virtually
complete. This involved re-building of pages set initially, before the overall character of the site
evolved. The remainder of pages for individual Appeals and Projects (see shaded boxes within
individual continents in Appeals - http://www.happychild.org.uk/nvs/appeals/index.htm - has been
completed with all pages upgraded as required, as have the General Events pages (linked from
http://www.happychild.org.uk/fr/events/index.htm ) and the Sponsored Events pages
for individual organizations (linked from
http://www.happychild.org.uk/fr/events/index.htm ). The November places for
Addaction's Vietnam Cycle Challenge are now fully booked but there are still places available for
the October Challenge and for the London Triathlon in September.
SYNDROMES
Our thanks to Terri Harding for sending in the URL for Dame Hannah Rogers School for the
Physically Disabled, and to Harvey Twyman for sending in details of "link families" helping with
respite care for handicapped children and those with special needs. Both are included in the
Syndromes Links Index ( http://www.happychild.org.uk/syndromes/index.htm ) - we've been
advised that a new website about Link Families is being built at present and should be on line some
time over the next few weeks.
GUESTBOOK APPEALS
We're continuing to receive a number of appeals from private individuals across the world who
trust that one of our many site visitors may be able to help. See the Guestbook page for an
appeal received this month from Alexander Ephraim in Malaysia who - due to the Asian economic
crash - is struggling to keep together a family of eight orphans - details at
http://www.happychild.org.uk/nvs/views/index.htm .
RESOURCES REQUIRED
Two more requests have been added to this page during July - one from Anita, in Atlanta,
Georgia, about educational film strips and teaching materials, and one from the National
Association of Toy & Leisure Libraries (UK) requesting toys and office equipment. The Resources
Required page is at http://www.happychild.org.uk/fr/resource/required/index.htm .
ACCELERATED LEARNING
Our resident memory expert, Michael Tipper, is back after his summer break and the August
articles are already on line - see http://www.happychild.org.uk/acc/tpr/index.htm . Also in
Michael's area is a new set of pages, "Frequently Asked Questions" which we're just starting to
build, to enable visitors to access Michael's previous replies to questions on common themes of
interest. We'll be gradually adding to these over the months ahead, whenever the pagebuilding
schedule allows.
As you know Michael's organising this year's World Memory Championships, so any questions about these can be sent directly to him.
INDEX TO FREE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
We've just completed a check-through of the Educational Resources Index (
http://www.happychild.org.uk/wks/index.htm ) which we do every six to eight weeks - this time
quite a number of the URLs have had to be modified, particularly the Biology-linked pages at
Harvard, and some of the computer science pages are temporarily unavailable. The WWWVL is in
the midst of a huge reorganization so we've left non-functioning links in place as they're likely to
be re-instated shortly (non-available URLs are noted on our Index page, however).
Well, that's about it for this month! I've tried to compress everything as much as possible, to minimise the length of the e-mail version of this Newsletter, but as you'll see there's been a great deal happening and the site is now at 781 pages in total (not including the re-direct pages which have been created during the course of re-structuring over the last few months, probably another 80 pages or so). Now that we have identified a work-able format for interlinking all areas worldwide, the need for any further re-direct pages in the future should be minimal.
Thanks to everyone for the endless liaison involved in page upgrades and the new Appeals areas, and also to the many visitors who've e-mailed Project HappyChild over the last few weeks. Feedback from visitors is always very much appreciated.
Penny.
