Project HappyChild NEWS - Issue 7

26th February 1999

Project HappyChild - linking children all across the world

Welcome to Issue 7 of Project HappyChild News.

We'd like to welcome all our new subscribers for this issue. There's been a lot of traffic on the site over the last four weeks, and as usual there's a lot happening.

1. SPONSORED EVENTS: New events include the "Alaskan Wilderness Challenge" (SENSE), "Walk the Great Wall of China" (Aberlour & The Children's Society), and a "Sponsored Ascent of Ben Nevis" (National Childbirth Trust). You'll find these at https://www.happychild.org.uk/fr/events/index.htm.

2. GENERAL EVENTS: The first event added for 1999 is a "Charity Fly Fishing Day" (organised by The Sick Children's Trust) which is a family day out and includes a ram roast, and a charity auction by Masterchef's Loyd Grossman. Details at https://www.happychild.org.uk/fr/events/index.htm.

3. GRAPHICS: Thanks to Corel Canada's kind gift of WebMaster Suite we have been able to enhance the overall graphic quality of the site whilst in the process of adding the translation facilities accorded to us by Systran. Our "help" page [ https://www.happychild.org.uk/index3.htm ] now includes a wide range of graphics which anyone supportive of the aims of Project HappyChild can use with a link to any of our pages.

4. EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES: We have added another section to this page, for items of general interest, such as the Vatican website, the British Royal Family website, No. 10 Downing Street, OFSTED, the Royal Mint - and much else. You'll find this below the main index of educational resources at https://www.happychild.org.uk/wks/index.htm.

5. ACCELERATED LEARNING: Our resident memory expert, Michael Tipper, is receiving an increasing number of e-mails from visitors across the world. A further set of articles has been added to this area since the last Newsletter, and Michael's next articles should be on line within the next day or two - you'll find these at https://www.happychild.org.uk/acc/tpr/index.htm.

6. APPEALS: We're in the process of re-structuring the Appeals section to make the pages accessible from more Internet browsers, and also to ensure that all relevant geographical areas are covered. We would request active help in identifying more appeals helping children, bearing in mind our growing worldwide audience. You'll find the main Appeals Index at https://www.happychild.org.uk/nvs/appeals/index.htm.

7. FOCUS: We have created a new section within News and Views (Area 6) [located at https://www.happychild.org.uk/nvs/focus/index.htm] to allow us to feature items of interest to visitors to the site. We're currently progressing the first planned item, which we hope to have on line within the next few weeks. Watch this space!

8. SITE INTERLINKS: Now that the basic areas of the site are all constructed [albeit that we're still in the process of upgrading and adding translation facilities in some areas] it has been possible to make an "interlinking table" to allow new visitors to find all the different major areas. This table is gradually being added to all Index pages across the site, to make it easier for everyone to find their way around.

The original "site map" [constructed in early summer last year] (https://www.happychild.org.uk/index4.htm) doesn't include all the areas now on the site: we hope to upgrade this (major html task!) when the Appeals and Schools areas are more complete, probably mid-summer or thereabouts. The PageMaster, also, only includes the 400 pages up to 12.12.98 - but again it's probably simplest to leave upgrading this until the rest of the pages are built. We trust that the "interlinking table" will serve as the major navigating resource, in the interim.

9. GUESTBOOK: The "Views" area has been restructured to accommodate e-mails arising from a number of areas of the site [the guestbook-entry-facility now appears on most Index pages] and you'll find a selection of recent guestbook entries at https://www.happychild.org.uk/nvs/views/index.htm.

10. SCHOOLS.

The major construction area this month has been in Schools Interchange - specifically, the UK & Ireland. In recent months we've discovered here are quite a few worldwide "school-nets" on the Internet - most with around 200-400 UK schools, and a couple in Britain with up to around 1500 - but nowhere near the 32,000 schools and universities we know exist across the whole of the UK.

Our original aim with Schools Interchange was to list all schools at Project HappyChild - but in the process of locating schools in the USA and Canada we have come to realise that it is infinitely more effective - for all involved - to identify "local nets" that list schools in a specific geographic region - thereby providing extended links to all the schools in any given area, without individual schools having to be listed separately on this website - or, indeed, on the growing number of "global school nets".

However, making these types of links for the UK didn't prove very straightforward - primarily because we couldn't locate any UK-wide schools listings subdivided by counties. On further investigation we discovered there was a reason this hadn't happened - the structure of the UK is infinitely more complex than it may at first appear.

England is subdivided into not only counties but also lieutenancies. Often there isn't a "County Council" but instead a number of "Unitary" authorities - sometimes the Unitary authorities exist as well as the County Council or are combined with a City Council - and some regions are divided into Metropolitan Boroughs or, as with London, into varying Borough Councils.

It was then that we began to realise the magnitude of the task involved in accurately identifying local authority listings of schools in the UK. But - as we discovered - they do exist, and some of them list many schools. So we decided that it would be appropriate to list all the relevant authorities UK-wide, which we've been progressing over the course of this month.

We've subdivided the whole area into England Counties A-M, England Counties N-Z, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. In Scotland and Wales we've listed all the main local authorities and visited all the sites to locate the school listings that exist, which you'll find on the relevant pages in Schools Interchange (index at https://www.happychild.org.uk/schools/england/index.htm). We've listed all the relevant authorities in England and Northern Ireland, and made a start on visiting the England sites to locate the schools-websites-listing pages. Sites not yet visited have an "x" by them but at least show an "authority address" where site visitors can start looking for schools in any given area, and we hope to visit the remainder of England authority sites, and progress through the N. Ireland sites, over the next two to three weeks, also to add a major listing of Ireland schools, recently discovered elsewhere on the Net.

This is inevitably a very lengthy task - but essential if Schools Interchange is to provide targeted links to schools in specific regions right across the UK. Already the Interchange provides extended links to thousands of UK schools and universities - and this will increase as (a) we identify the website-listing-pages, (b) the listed authorities progressively add more schools in their area which are going on line.

We would like to express our thanks to those schools who originally listed their details at Project HappyChild - it was exploring their sites initially that brought the dawning realization that there was a lot of networking going on already, and that we should find some way of effectively interlinking with it, to maximise the speed at which schools can link across the world. These schools are now listed on our main Schools Interchange credits page.

We are asking site visitors to help us identify local-authority-listings for other countries of the world, and will be adding links to areas of Australia and Europe over the next few weeks.

11. DIRECTORY: All notified Directory amendments have recently been added [please would charities check to ensure their changes have been included] and we are wherever possible cross-linking to Appeals, booklists, catalogues etc. to make it easier for visitors to find all the relevant details about any particular organization. The Directory Index is at https://www.happychild.org.uk/dir/index.htm - and the interlinked "Syndromes Links Index" is at https://www.happychild.org.uk/syndromes/index.htm.

*****

This has been a short month - but an incredibly busy one. Our Server, Force 9, has been been making major upgrades to its capacity so our apologies to anyone who's had problems reaching us - I gather the upgrades are more or less complete so hopefully access should be more consistent in the months ahead.

Now that the website is nearing completion we would appreciate site-links to Project HappyChild from linked organizations and schools: you'll know from our visitor count that traffic is continuing to accelerate but now that more of the resources are in place, it tends to be more "through traffic" as visitors make active use of the links provided to resources, organizations and schools - which is ideal, from everyone's point of view.

*****

I'd like to express my personal thanks to all the many people who have supported this project and helped it to "get off the ground" - we've had an extraordinary level of support and building this website has proved very rewarding - if challenging at times! Special thanks are due to those who are mentioned on our "Sponsors" page - see https://www.happychild.org.uk/fr/sponsors/index.htm - and also to the many individuals working for charities helping children, who have provided the information in the Directory, Appeals, events, catalogues and booklists sections.

Project HappyChild will have been "on line" for a year on 4th March 1999 - we are very much hoping to reach 9000 visitors by that date, which will be amazing for the "first year".

However we'd like to aim for ten times that amount over the next twelve months (this only represents a four-fold increase on the current traffic level, which has increased dramatically in recent months), and reaching a target of 90,000 visitors a year is easily possible if enough individuals and organizations make links from their home page to this website - your help in this would be appreciated.

My personal thanks go to everyone who has already "made a link" - the level of support so far has been wonderful.

NEWS ARCHIVEBest wishes,

Penny.
