Project HappyChild NEWS - Issue 6 26th January 1999 |
Welcome to Issue 6 of Project HappyChild News.
This has been a busy month! Probably the most significant addition to the site has been the massive index to worldwide Free Educational Resources which has now been compiled [https://www.happychild.org.uk/wks/index.htm]. After several months of identifying educational resources on the Internet, via the Search Engines, we concluded that the WWW Virtual Library offers the broadest possible range - however we only found bits and pieces of it, over time, and it's probable that most people originally discover it this way.
In order to make this Library more easily accessible to schools and universities, we have worked through the WWWVL Index pages and constructed a one-page Index incorporating selected categories along the lines of the WWWVL index tree [for ease of further research by visitors], with around 200 links to items of specific interest. These include on-line books and plays, Sheffield University's on-line chemical calculator, resources and tutorials for website building, and extensive resources to aid teachers in teaching / learning Internet skills.
We have also included items like Cambridge University's Ozone Hole Tour website, and their Maths resources for Key Stages 1-5 (K12). Schools and universities are welcome to nominate other specific resources in subjects in the 5-18 age range - to simplify the process, please if possible identify the correct key stage and subject along the lines of the Index for advanced maths resources [https://www.happychild.org.uk/wks/math/advanced/index.htm].
The Index also includes items of general interest for kids, like where to find homepages for football clubs worldwide - eg Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
There are extensive foreign-language resources [including classical Greek and Latin] and to aid non-English-speaking visitors to our site we have added a link from the Educational Resources index to a page at Uruguay University linked to search engines all over the world, some of which are also accessible in the indigenous language.

The next major development has been the setting up of extended links to over 100,000 USA and Canada schools and universities, so that these are now accessible via the website. We're gradually researching premier school-net-link sites globally, to enable us to link progressively to schools across the world.
You'll find USA schools and universities at https://www.happychild.org.uk/schools/usa/index.htm and Canada schools and universities at https://www.happychild.org.uk/schools/canada/index.htm.

Another new area of the site is "Syndromes Links" [https://www.happychild.org.uk/syndromes/index.htm]. Syndromes is possibly not quite the right word - what this area is for, is to enable visitors to the site to find help for various conditions which children may experience, or to give information about areas in which help is available in one way or another. This is an alphabetical index of conditions, mainly but not exclusively linked to organizations currently in the Project HappyChild Directory. E-mails received indicate that the Syndromes Links page is already being actively used to make contact with organizations in the Directory.

The number of visitors to the website has increased radically over the past couple of weeks - now up to around 500 per week. These seem to be fairly continuous over the 24-hour day, so it's likely that people are now visiting from a number of areas of the world (this is confirmed to some degree by e-mails being received). Our thanks are due to SpiderWeb in Denver, Colorado, who recently spidered our PageMaster to 2000 search engines and links pages worldwide, and to Force 9 (our Internet Server) who recently put up a link to us from their homepages.
Quite a number of companies (as well as schools) now seem to be visiting the site and one of the most uplifting developments this month was the offer last week by a company of a donation to a charity in the Project HappyChild Directory. This is the first such donation we know of - we trust there will be many more as the months progress, and the site becomes gradually better known.
Directory page and Index updates are currently in progress and should be completed by the end of this month. We are still awaiting some notified amendments [and text from two more charities who have asked to be included] and hope to have these on line shortly also. It would be appreciated if those organizations who have notified us of updates could check their Directory entries at the beginning of February to ensure that all items are accurate.

We are currently liaising with some Directory organizations working internationally in order to be able to feature their work worldwide in the Appeals and Projects area of the website. We will also in due course be approaching ReliefWeb organizations (there's a link to ReliefWeb from the Educational Resources Index) to widen the scope of work featured within Appeals, bearing in mind our growing worldwide audience.
This month we've added an appeal by BLISS (baby life support systems) to the UK Appeals section, giving some idea of the incredible range of their work supporting "special care babies" throughout Britain. We've linked to this Appeal from the opening screen of the Welcome Page - because of the increasing size of the website, now almost 500 pages, we'll be notifying developments on the opening screen to make it easier for our regular visitors to indentify newly-added resources on the site.
Further articles by Michael Tipper on Accelerated Learning are now on line https://www.happychild.org.uk/acc/tpr/index.htm) and more are due up in a few days.
Kathryn Watts' 2nd bulletin is now on line https://www.happychild.org.uk/nvs/news/kathryn/index.htm] and we hope to include her article on her recent visit to Morocco / Marrakesh, shortly.
We've updated the General Events index page [which is now completely bare!] and would appreciate info re general events organised for 1999 as soon as possible. This page can be used by charities, schools and companies to post up details of general events being organised to benefit disadvantaged children - please allow a few days for pagebuilding this end, and if possible give at least 4 weeks notice of event date.
We'd like to thank everyone who's been in touch this month - and our apologies if you only received an autoresponder, there simply hasn't been time to reply to everyone individually. All messages are logged and read but the time pressures this month have been extraordinary. We hope to be able to complete the "solid pagebuilding" within the existing infrastructure by about the end of March, to incorporate all the information we now have to hand - however dually we are in the process of reformatting pages across the site (to allow for different browser compatibilities) so it may take a little longer than that before everything is fully "on line" and there is more time for liaison with everyone.
Any notifications in the interim of further items for Appeals and Projects (in any area of the world), General Events etc., would be welcomed and will be given advance priority in the pagebuilding schedule.
Next issue of the Newsletter is scheduled for somewhere around the end of February.
Penny.
