MERU - The Medical Engineering Resource Unit

MERU is a unique English charitable organization dedicated to the application of engineering skills for the benefit of disabled children and young adults.

Referrals can be made by the parents of a child, preferably in liaison with a qualified health worker, or by any of the professionals working with disabled children who need our advice or assistance.

	Stripey is a chair designed at MERU that can be quickly customised to suit a disabled child, where no commercial alternative exists. It takes the name from the simple construction where colourful blocks of lightweight foam are inserted within a plastic frame to suit the child's and parent's needs.
There are very few satisfactory products on the market that will seat a severely disabled child. Given the time and financial resources we know we can research and develop a version of Stripey that could be used safely in the car.
	The Air-Chair is a unique seat insert that allows disabled children to fly (developed initially after an approach by the family of a child with severe cerebral palsy). The Air-Chair has been tested by Virgin and other airlines.

From many of the specialist one-off devices made for individual children, ideas and solutions have emerged for the special needs of disabled children on a much wider scale than those in just our immediate locality.

Although the governing ethos of MERU is the making of individual devices and equipment for children in our local area, we are alert to the fact that we must freely share our findings with other organizations dealing with children's disabilities wherever they are in the world."

There's a great deal more to see at the MERU website - a STRIPEY infant bathing chair, MERULITE school chairs, devices for computer accessing for disabled children, slings and hoists for lifting, a portable traction bed and operating theatre equipment.

"We are more than happy to share our development work with other charitable organizations who may wish to replicate one of our custom-made products. In this way we can put something back and help disabled children wherever they live."
