STREET CHILDREN IN GALATI, ROMANIA

There are around 200 street children in Galati, in South East Romania, many of whom come from poor families that cannot give them enough food and clothing. And many more who were raised in orphanages and whose parents have abandoned them.

Many of the street children don't know to read or to write and they are trapped in "street life" with no apparent way of escape. All have experienced abuse of some kind, and many of them don't know any other way of living - the result is confusion between right and wrong, low self-esteem, split personalities.

Five of the children shown on the left are now living with us at the Betesda "My Family" home for streetchildren.

Our charitable foundation is based in Galati. We work with street children and poor families from Romania and the Republic of Moldova: our house for street children in Galati is currently home to 18 children. This summer we hope to complete an expansion project to provide homes for another 20 children - some of whom have been on the streets for several years.

Also we have a program to help poor families who have children at risk of becoming street children. Some of these children come regularly to our daily "Drop-In" centre, where they can get a shower, food, and some basic education.

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

The Drop-In Centre strives to fill the gap between street life and home life. Where possible we help the child to return to his family, or to find a relative, friend or foster family that will take him/her in - if not, we try to find a place for the child at Betesda or another children's home.

pictures showing how the Betesda home came into being .....

Our current "drop in" centre is an apartment more than a mile away from where many of the street children spend their time. A lot of children don't come because they're in conflicting "street gangs" or are afraid of being beaten up on the way to the centre. We want the "drop in" centre to be a shelter within their environment.

At least two days a week, we go to the children on the streets - we bring food and play games. We show these children (usually about 20) that we are not ashamed to meet them where they are.

We are hoping to buy a 200m x 200m piece of land which is a 2-minute walk from where the street children sleep, and construct a one-level "drop in" centre for these kids.

This would contain multiple showers, a large room for eating and activities, and a room for medical treatment and counselling. Also a little land would be available for playing, and for a garden.

We need to raise over $20,000 for the purchase of the land and construction of the Centre (our prayer is to finish this by autumn 1999).

Donations towards the costs of our Drop-In Centre will be much welcomed.

With your help we can make it possible
for street children to find their way back
to a normal family life

If you would like to sponsor a child at the "My Family" home on a long-term basis, you will be helping him or her to stay at the home and leave behind the memories of past experiences. The cost to keep each child at the home is $20 per week, to include all related expenses.
To help children of poor families who might otherwise be at risk of becoming street children, i.e. by providing required clothing, shoes, food, and school supplies, costs $20 per month per child.
The Foundation is setting up a Micro-Farm project to help us generate financial income to maintain existing and planned projects. Please click here for details of the items we need in order to help us to progress this.
The Betesda Foundation is also committed to helping the state school in the village of Girgiulesti, Republic of Moldova, which has 600 students and whose teachers have not been paid since August 1998. There is no running water at the school and all students drink water from a single bucket.

To safeguard a teacher's salary (and thus enable him/her to stay at the school) costs $35 per month. Another way of helping would be to construct a water well (which would help many in the village also) - however the required cost is $5000.

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

We would value your support for our work - the possibilities of helping the
many street children and alleviating the extreme poverty here are very
limited without financial help from others.

We are very committed to our work but we can't do this alone .....

Please e-mail Benu Bulugu at benub@yahoo.com if you can help in any way.

Thank You.
