APPEAL FOR HELP IN LANDMINES AWARENESS TRAINING ... please do help if you can

LANDMINES IN BOSNIA

Some while back, we were contacted by I R SMITH, Warrant Officer Class 2, Divisional Mines Awareness Trainer, 35 Engineer Regiment, about Landmines Awareness Training for children in Bosnia [read his letter here].

To quote from his letter - "Our third and probably most important task is the teaching of children of all ages. The messages we try to get across are the dangers mines pose, how to avoid them and what to do if they find themselves in a minefield. The schools here in Bosnia are very poorly equipped. Many have been damaged by the civil war. In some cases mines surround the schools.

"In an attempt to drive home our message, particularly to small children, we give out small toys, crayons, colouring books and sweets.

"We also like to present the school with a small amount of stationery. All the things we give out have come from companies in the UK and from the soldiers themselves. This supply has all but dried up ..... it would be extremely beneficial for the children if schools, teachers, parents, children and any companies who visit your web site could please help by sending a few of the items? They would be gratefully received and could help to save a child's life."

The British Army presence in Bosnia is now being drawn down, but mines awareness training for Bosnia continues and any donations of small items to help with Landmines Awareness Training for kids in Bosnia may for the time being be sent c/o :

Royal Engineers, Mine Information Coordination Cell,
Marshal Tito Barracks, Sarajevo, BFPO 543.

Our thanks to DZ in Bosnia for information recently provided on the current situation with Landmines Awareness Training for Children; we are hoping to be able to post up a permanent address for donations from site visitors, in the near future.

Our thanks go to Captain James Webster, UK Mine Information and Training Centre, Camberley, to
Staff Sergeant Nick Du Val (Gibraltar Barracks), and to Sgt Layard Soulsby, Webmaster,
Directorate of Corporate Communication (Army), for their help and information provided in May 2003.
