where to find help for kids

There are a lot of organizations helping children - but it's not always easy to find the one you need when your child needs help.

In our Syndromes Links index we've put together a massive list of different organizations helping kids - alphabetical by the condition, rather than the organizations, so it's easier to find what you're looking for.

This index is already becoming a significant resource, with links to organizations helping with common conditions like dyslexia, asthma and eczema, but also a huge range of syndromes and remedies such as Conductive Education [linked to a massive listing of organizations worldwide], ADHD [a saga written by a parent who worked steadily through all the options to find ways of liberating a child from the restrictions of ADHD, rather than using Ritalin], brain-injured children, specialised seating for disabled children, accommodation for parents whose children are in hospital, profound handicaps, rare diseases ..... the list is endless.

The Syndromes Links index also includes a significant Educational Psychology resource - free advice by e-mail from qualified Educational Psychologists plus free-to-print strategies ("pre-prepared interventions") for teachers and parents dealing with special educational needs - provided free by Tim Francis and colleagues in the UK.

Other themes include Cot Death with a link to the website of a forensic scientist in New Zealand, Jim Sprott, who campaigns actively for the endorsement of mattress-wrapping and associated measures for cot death prevention - "Mattress-wrapping for cot death prevention, which has been publicised in New Zealand for over four years, has had a 100% success rate ... there has been no reported cot death among the tens of thousands of babies who have slept on mattresses wrapped to the Cot Life 2000 specifications."

The importance of 'play' facilities is featured in the FOCUS area which includes links to organizations offering advice about how playground equipment and impact absorbing surfaces can be used to comply with health & safety legislation, as well as on the setting up and running of adventure playgrounds so children can have a local place to call their own (and also helping schools to improve their playgrounds).
