Any Language to English

"Any Language to English is a relatively-new area at Project HappyChild, and replaces "Build Your Own Website", written in the fledgling stages of this site, when building a website at all was a major undertaking, and we needed to explain "how it was done" for the benefit of schools and charities taking their first steps in pagebuilding.

Much has changed since then! and, seven years down the track, in 2005, it became time to launch a new concept that, ironically, only the mind-map-structure of this website and the Internet itself makes possible.

"Any Language to English" is a huge area with over 800 worksheets, that maps out the basic structure of English vocabulary themes and links them together in a format which allows the worksheets to be used for teaching English from any other language worldwide.

The translated words can be written into the blank spaces and photocopied to use for teaching English to children and students in any country. But, more than this, if the translator puts those same translated words into our (pre-prepared) database, we can output dual-language worksheets and put them on line here so they're available wherever they're needed. This should be possible for *any* html-compatible language in any country where the "teaching-of-English-to-children" is required.

We've already completed the basic French dual-language area - all the English-to-French (and French-to-English) verbs and vocabulary worksheets are already on line *here* and a number of other languages are now scheduled or in progress.

Free worksheets for Russian-English vocabulary, Romanian-English verbs and vocabulary, Polish-English vocabulary, German-English verbs and vocabulary, Dutch-English verbs and vocabulary, Italian-English verbs, and Arabic-English verbs and vocabulary are already on line.

Latest addition (25th April 2009): Urdu-English vocabulary (see also Wall-to-Wall Urdu).

The possibilities are endless :) All that's required for us to add this entire resource in a "new language" (for example Japanese) is for one individual who is fluent in both Japanese and English, to offer to translate the vocabulary or verb content (around 4000 words or phrases in each) from English to Japanese and enter the words into an already-prepared database.

The translations need to be checked by a professional linguist (for accuracy and for suitability for children) then an entire set of English/Japanese dual-language worksheets could be generated within a few days, and uploaded to this site, for use by children and schools anywhere in the world.

Tests have already taken place for written languages like Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese, and the Arabic-English worksheets have now been successfully output - there seem to be no 'browser issues' at all, which makes it likely that almost any language for which there are hex codes can be processed in this way [and all the set-ups for this are already fully in place].

This is all being done by volunteers. No fee, no payment. And quite a lot of work :) but once the translation and checking is done, the rest follows very swiftly. If you'd like to see Bengali-English or Thai-English or Korean-English or Icelandic-English worksheets on line, and you speak the language (and maybe know someone professionally qualified in it who could help with the checking) - why not get in touch? It really is *that* simple.

Many schools are now experiencing huge influxes of children of other nationalities, and could really make use of any new language sets that become available (because kids can learn English *together* by means of this resource, no matter what their native language might be, if the worksheets are available for the language/s they already speak fluently).
