THE APOTHECARY

"the Apothecary ... was fascinating enough to make up for its horrible smell, a mixture of bad eggs and rotted cabbages. Barrels of slimy stuff stood on the floor; jars of herbs, dried roots, and bright powders lined the walls; bundles of feathers, strings of fangs, and snarled claws hung from the ceiling" [book 1, chapter 5]

EEYLOPS OWL EMPORIUM

"a low, soft hooting came from a dark shop with a sign saying "Eeylops Owl Emporium - Tawny, Screech, Barn, Brown and Snowy" ... "dark and full of rustling and flickering, jewel-bright eyes" [book 1, chapter 5]

FLOURISH AND BLOTTS

"the shelves were stacked to the ceiling with books as large as paving stones bound in leather; books the size of postage stamps in covers of silk; books full of peculiar symbols and a few books with nothing in them at all" [book 1, chapter 5]

MADAM MALKIN'S ROBES
FOR ALL OCCASIONS

run by
MADAM MALKIN

"MADAM MALKIN stood HARRY on a stool ... slipped a long robe over his head, and began to pin it to the right length." [book 1, chapter 5]

OLLIVANDERS

run by
MR OLLIVANDER

"The last shop was narrow and shabby. Peeling gold letters over the door read Ollivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 B.C. A single wand lay on a faded purple cushion in the dusty window ..... A tinkling bell rang somewhere in the depths of the shop as they stepped inside. It was a tiny place, empty except for a single, spindly chair" [book 1, chapter 5]

THE LEAKY CAULDRON

run by
TOM THE BARTENDER

"It was a tiny, grubby-looking pub. If HAGRID hadn't pointed it out, HARRY wouldn't have noticed it was there ..... in fact, HARRY had the most peculiar feeling that only he and HAGRID could see it." [book 1, chapter 5]

This page - like many of the pages on this website - is under construction whilst all the different aspects of the books are linked together. Sol's "Welcome page" gives details about the different areas of the site and new items being added - along with Harry Potter book reviews and film reviews - and the main Area 13 index page gives an overview of our reasons for creating this intricate guide to JK Rowling's Harry Potter books.

The massive amount of set-up work to engineer the interlinking of tens of thousands of keywords (characters, magic and spells, locations, items, creatures) across all seven books has now been completed. However in the light of ongoing uncertainties about 'Harry Potter copyrights' (affecting all websites or site areas with Harry-Potter-related themes), you may wish to read our Special Note of 1st July 2008. It provides a unique insight into *why* the Harry Potter books have been so successful - as well as showing "how to write like J K Rowling", if you'd like to see "how it was done" and you're planning to write a book some day ....
