"Hundreds of seats were raised in stands around the pitch so that the spectators were high enough to see what was going on. At either end of the pitch were three golden poles with hoops on the end." [Book 1, Chapter 10]

The Game of QUIDDITCH
* [click on underlined words for other areas]

THE PLAYERS:
[seven on each side]

3 Chasers: "The Chasers throw the Quaffle to each other and try and get it through one of the hoops to score a goal. Ten points every time the Quaffle goes through one of the hoops."

2 Beaters: "It's their job to protect their side from the Bludgers and try and knock them towards the other team."

1 Keeper: "fly around our hoops and stop the other team from scoring"

1 Seeker: "It's the Seeker's job to catch it [the Golden Snitch]. You've got to weave in and out of the Chasers, Beaters, Bludgers and Quaffle to get it before the other team's Seeker, because whichever Seeker catches the Snitch wins his team an extra hundred and fifty points"

THE BALLS:
[four in total]

1 Quaffle: "a bright red ball about the size of a football"

2 Bludgers: "two identical balls, jet black and slightly smaller than the red Quaffle" ....."The Bludgers rocket around trying to knock players off their brooms."

1 Golden Snitch: "Compared with the Quaffle and the Bludgers, it was tiny, about the size of a large walnut. It was bright gold and had little fluttering silver wings." ..... "the most important ball of the lot ... very hard to catch because it's so fast and difficult to see"

This page - like many of the pages on this website - is under construction whilst all the different aspects of the books are linked together. Sol's "Welcome page" gives details about the different areas of the site and new items being added - along with Harry Potter book reviews and film reviews - and the main Area 13 index page gives an overview of our reasons for creating this intricate guide to JK Rowling's Harry Potter books.

The massive amount of set-up work to engineer the interlinking of tens of thousands of keywords (characters, magic and spells, locations, items, creatures) across all seven books has now been completed. However in the light of ongoing uncertainties about 'Harry Potter copyrights' (affecting all websites or site areas with Harry-Potter-related themes), you may wish to read our Special Note of 1st July 2008. It provides a unique insight into *why* the Harry Potter books have been so successful - as well as showing "how to write like J K Rowling", if you'd like to see "how it was done" and you're planning to write a book some day ....
