X-rays are that part of the electro-magnetic spectrum with a wavelength longer than gamma radiation, but shorter than UV light.


Because their wavelength is so short, X-rays can penetrate matter and will ionise atoms within it.


The ionising effect is the reason that exposure to X-rays - especially in large amounts - is potentially dangerous to living organisms, as damage to biomolecules, such as DNA, can cause long-term problems with cells' ability to function properly, including cancer.
