A system is a group of interrelated parts which, because of the relationship(s) between them, inside the system, form a unified whole in respect of their relationship to the wider environment and can be distinguished from it.
Open systems exchange matter and energy with the wider environment; closed systems exchange only energy with the wider environment; and an isolated system exchanges neither energy nor matter with its environment.
Examples could be: the Universe (isolated system, as far as we know!), the Earth (closed system) and a living organism (open system).
