Microwaves are waves of electro-magnetic radiation which lie between radio waves (which have a longer wavelength) and infra-red radiation (which has a shorter wavelength).

Common applications of microwaves include use as carrier waves in communication and as a power source for cooking food.

When microwaves hit food, they have the effect of causing the rapid oscillation of certain types of molecules within it (water, fats, and sugars).

These molecules knock into others and the energy is transferred, causing heating.
