Liquid crystals are a state of arrangement of matter which is in between those found in liquids and that found in solids which are crystals.
The molecules in liquid crystals can move around enough for the substance to flow, like a liquid, but still keep some of the particular orientations to each other in space that exist in a crystalline solid.
This is due to their rod-like shape and polarity.
Liquid crystals were first discovered in the natural world - cell membranes are liquid crystals, for example - and we now know how to manufacture others, for example for use in electrical displays like those on mobile phones.
