LEDs (or light-emitting diodes) are electrical components which contain a semi-conductor which has the property of emitting light when electricity is passed through it in one direction.
The colour of light emitted by the LED depends on the structure of the semi-conductor; many different colours can now be produced.
LEDs are more energy-efficient than filament lamps, halogen lamps or fluorescent lamps and are used in planes, car lights and traffic signals, but at present tend to be too expensive to manufacture to be used for ordinary room lighting.
