Communications satellites (also known as COMSATs) are a type of man-made satellite used to receive transmissions directed at them (such as radio waves) which can then be amplified and directed back to the Earth for onward transmission, increasing the range of reception.

In order for them to receive transmissions from fixed points on the Earth - radio transmitters, for example - COMSATs are set to orbit the Earth in a circular pattern above the Equator, usually with a time period of 24 hours and in the same direction as the Earth's spin.

By this means they effectively stay directly above the same place on the Earth's surface (this is known as geostationary orbit).
