Molecular formulae are what most people picture when they think of the shorthand way of writing the name of a substance in chemistry. The molecular formula is the type of chemical formula which counts the numbers of atoms of different elements present and gives this information using their chemical symbols, rather than names, but gives NO information about bonding.
eg the molecular formula of the water molecule is H2O
The molecular formula of the hydroxide ion is OH- .
