Metallic bonding is the type of chemical bonding found within all metals, and involves the sharing of valency electrons.

In metallic bonding, the valency electrons of each atom become delocalised, and are free to travel between the positively-charged metal ions that remain, which arrange themselves in a giant lattice.

Metallic bonding thus has some similarities with ionic bonding, but the electrons are never transferred from one atom to another.

It is the free movement of electrons within their structure which accounts for the physical properties of metals, such as their malleability, conductivity and shine (light hitting the delocalised electrons transmits energy to them, which they re-emit (reflect) ).
