An ion is an electrically-charged particle formed by the loss or gain of one or more electrons from an atom.


eg the sodium ion Na+ is formed when an atom of sodium (Na) loses one electron, and a chloride ion Cl- is formed when an atom of chlorine (Cl) gains one electron.
