HOMOLOGOUS SERIES

A homologous series is a group of organic compounds which all have the same empirical formula.


For example, the alkanes all have the formula
C_nH_2n+2
(where n = number of atoms).


Members of a homologous series, therefore, have similar chemical properties, but their physical properties change as the size of their molecules increases.
