The mantle (or Earth's mantle) is that layer of our planet's structure which lies immediately under the crust and above the core, and makes up 70% of the Earth's volume.
The mantle consists of rock which is hot enough to flow slowly. Inside the mantle, convection takes place, with the hotter material near the core rising slowly to the surface.
Sometimes hot rock from deep in the mantle escapes through cracks in the Earth's crust, for example through volcanoes.
