Crude oil is a fossil fuel. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons, generally found at depths below the Earth's surface, or sea bed. It is a brown viscous liquid and because it is liquid, it can be separated into its parts by fractional distillation.

Crude Oil is a very big part of modern life, because it provides the fuel for most of our transport, and the raw materials for making many man-made products, such as plastics. But, it has to be split up by fractional distillation to obtain the fractions / parts which are useful.
