Chemical symbols are the shortened version of the names of the elements used in the periodic table and in chemical formulae. The letter(s) chosen to be chemical symbols are the first one or two letters of the English (or, in some cases, Latin) name for that element. For example, O is the chemical symbol for oxygen, whilst Na is the symbol for sodium (from the Latin, "Natrium"). Some man-made elements have been given three letters, eg Unq (unnilquadium).
