Veins are blood vessels in the circulatory system which carry low pressure blood from the tissues towards the heart.
Because it comes from the respiring tissues, this blood will be deoxygenated, although there is an exception: the blood in the pulmonary vein is highly oxygenated, as this comes directly from the lungs.
Veins have a wide lumen, to allow blood to travel easily, contain valves to prevent back-flow and have a smooth lining to prevent friction.
