Much research is going on using embryonic stem cells.
The main goal of this research is to understand how it is that undifferentiated cells become differentiated into the specialised cells that form different tissues and organs, as many serious diseases (such as cancer) are due to abnormal cell division and differentiation.
Other areas in which stem cell research goes on are the testing of new drugs and the development of therapies involving the use of stem cells to repair and renew tissues damaged through disease or injury.
Examples are the repair of the retina in some forms of blindness, or regeneration of new nerve cells in the spinal cord in paralysis.
